Hero MotoCorp to launch new scooters this Diwali to boost its market share https://indianautosblog.com/hero-motocorp-new-scooters-diwali-p321511 Thu, 03 Sep 2020 11:15:30 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=321511 Hero MotoCorop is one of the largest two-wheeler manufacturers in the world. In India, it has a strong dealership and service network which is one of the reasons why it has a good grip even in the rural areas.

While Hero MotoCorp has been performing well in the domestic motorcycle market, its products in the scooter segment have not been very helpful in increasing its market share. Now, to get back in the game and enhance its presence in the domestic scooter segment, Hero MotoCorp will launch new scooters this Diwali.

Hero MotoCorp currently has 4 scooter models on sale in India - Destini 125, Maestro 125, Maestro 110 and Pleasure+. However, they were not sufficient for the company to stay in the 3rd place in the scooter segment in FY20. While Honda was leading in this space thanks to products like the Activa and Dio, and TVS occupying the 2nd position, Suzuki overtook Hero MotoCorp and grabbed the 3rd place.

Speaking to shareholders at the recent annual general meeting, Pawan Munjal, Chairman and Managing Director, Hero MotoCorp, said:

We had, at one point in time, a 19% market share in the scooter segment, where I am sure we will get back and we will also go beyond that. We are focusing on a few models so that the entire investment, entire focus, entire effort goes behind those few models, few segments, to get to a higher market share which we used to have. We have had recent launches in the scooter segment. Going forward, closer to the Diwali season, you will see more launches.

As of now, Hero MotoCorp has not released any concrete information about its upcoming scooter launches. However, it is being speculated that considering the increased demand for 125cc scooters, it is likely that Hero MotoCorp will launch at least one model in this category.

Other prominent changes to the scooter include ditching the carburettor for fuel injection. The 124.6 cc air-cooled mill now produces 9.1 PS of power and 10. 4 Nm of torque in BS-VI tune. The outgoing BS-IV version churned out 8.82 PS of power and 10.2 Nm of torque. Hero claims that the Destini 125 in BS-VI tune returns 11% more fuel efficiency and is 10% faster while accelerating.

The Hero Destini 125 retains i3S technology which switches off the engine when at a traffic signal or when the rider stops for an extended time period. This switchable system can be controlled by toggling a switch on the handlebar.

Hero MotoCorp has made a trademark application for “Freedo” name. The company could be reserving this name for an upcoming two-wheeler.

Could it be an electric scooter?

Hero MotoCorp’s rival brands like Bajaj Auto and TVS Motor Company are already developing their respective electric products. In fact, Bajaj Auto will launch its first electric two-wheeler, the Chetak, on 14 January.

Hero MotoCorp has a stake in Bengaluru-based start-up Ather Energy. It may use the R&D learnings of Ather Energy to develop its own product. Bajaj Auto opted to revive the Chetak brand and thus used retro-styling for its product. Hero MotoCorp may develop contemporary styling. We could see modern features such as full-LED lighting and a Bluetooth-enabled digital instrument console on this upcoming product.

The new electric scooter could work with a smartphone app to offer features such as diagnostics, navigation function, ride history and more. Other hardware specifications may include telescopic forks at the front as part of the shock absorption department. Expect the braking setup to include disc brake at the front and a drum unit at the back.

Could it be another internal combustion engine vehicle?

Hero MotoCorp has already introduced the Destini 125, a family-oriented scooter the 125 cc space while the company caters to young buyers through the Maestro Edge 125. Adding another 125 cc scooter may not be a good strategy.

The word Freedo can be associated with Freedom, although the company already has the XPulse 200 and the XPulse 200T in its portfolio, and thus it will be safe to write-off an adventure-oriented motorcycle. The 2019 EICMA show witnessed the arrival of the 1.R Concept roadster-segment motorcycle that will join the company’s X-series models (currently comprising Xtreme and XPulse bikes). Thus, the Freedo tag will not go to that series.

Hero MotoCorp is among the list of manufacturers to skip Auto Expo 2020, and thus we may have to wait for some time before we can hear some more details about the Freedo brand.

Hero MotoCorp asks Government to consider phase-wise reduction in GST - Report https://indianautosblog.com/hero-motocorp-asks-government-to-consider-phase-wise-reduction-in-gst-report-p318483 Thu, 19 Sep 2019 15:15:09 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=318483 Hero MotoCorp has requested the government to consider a phase-wise reduction of GST. The two-wheeler brand suggested that the government reduced the GST on two-wheelers in the initial stage and later bring the lower rates to four-wheelers. The GST Council is scheduled to meet on 20 September in Goa.

2018 Hero Passion Super Splendor side angle
The lower GST rate will offer some solace against the price increases due to revised insurance rates and the addition of mandatory CBS/ABS tech.

Speaking to Press Trust of India (PTI), Niranjan Gupta, CFO, Hero MotoCorp, said:

I understand that potential adverse impact on government revenue is becoming a constraint (for GST rate cut). While increased sales should take care of that, even if we assume a shortfall in revenue, a resolution can be found if we approach this topic in phases… This will contain the potential revenue loss, and also cover around 20 million buyers.

The company suggests that the Government can look at reducing the GST rate on two-wheelers under the 150 cc displacement to 18% (from the present 28%). Bringing the GST rate to 18% for the sub-150 cc category will provide relief to 16 million potential customers. Gupta added:

They are drivers of economy, especially in the heart of the nation, in tier II, III cities and villages. They not only provide mobility to millions, but also make them employable and support small businesses. Thus, it is unfair to club them under the same category as four-wheelers or expensive motorcycles.

Regular readers would know that the automobile industry is suffering from lacklustre sales due to the steep price increase over the past one year, which is a result of revised insurance rates and the mandatory installation of CBS/ABS safety tech to all two-wheelers. A lower GST rate will offer some solace against the price increase. The reduced GST rate will also help insulate the BS-VI impact that is likely to be a 10% to 15% price hike.

The Splendor range took a massive hit in its sales performance in July this year. Hero MotoCorp registered a 50% fall in year-on-year sales for this commuter bike, reporting 1,30,333 unit sales in July 2019 as against 2,60,865 units in the corresponding month last year.

Hero MotoCorp revised the prices of its complete portfolio earlier this month. The new ex-showroom tags are approximately 1% higher than the previous levels. The ‘Hero Scooters Grand Carnival’ offer will reduce some effects of the price hike from the scooter range.

The new home delivery service will cost an additional INR 349 over the on-road price of any new two-wheeler from Hero MotoCorp. Top 10 best-selling automatic scooter in India - June 2019 https://indianautosblog.com/top-10-automatic-scooter-in-india-june-2019-p318004 Tue, 30 Jul 2019 05:24:16 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=318004 Automatic scooters form a major chunk of two-wheeler sales in India. However, they have been affected due to the ongoing economic slump. Scooter had a market share of 32% in June 2018, and in June 2019, the market share was at 31%. That’s despite the fact that the Indian two-wheeler market has shrunk by nearly 12%. The Honda Activa continues to be a major crowd puller but its magic wand may have seemed to have lost a few stars. The Splendor has overtaken the Activa once again but the gap was just around 6,000 units in June 2019. TVS Jupiter also lost on volumes but continues to be in the second spot.

The shining light though is the Suzuki Access 125 which continues to be the largest selling 125 cc scooter. Besides that, Access 125 has also shrunk the gap from Jupiter to a little less than 8,000 units. Here is the list of the top 10 best-selling automatic scooters in India in June 2019:

Honda Activa: Powering the next two-wheeler revolution

Honda Activa 5G front at 2018 Auto Expo
Honda Activa 5G sales stood at 2,36,739 units sold in June 2019.

With 2,36,739 units sold in June 2019, things are in the red for the Honda Activa. In fact, a 26% drop in sales in the first quarter of FY 2019-20 may seem pretty grim. However, Honda can still pull off stellar sales in the upcoming festive season. In fact, June was the company's best-ever performance in this fiscal. Prices of the Honda Activa start at INR 54,911 (ex-showroom, Delhi). Honda even introduced a Limited Edition Activa recently to with some cosmetic changes to get the volumes up.

The Honda Activa is powered by a time tested 109.19 cc mill. Key features include a mix of digital and analogue instrumentation, LED headlamp and Eco Speed Indicator. Also available is a service due indicator and a 4-in-1 lock with seat opening switch.

TVS Jupiter: The one that got away

Tvs Jupiter Zx Disc Brake Variants Left Front Quar
The TVS Jupiter underwent a minor drop in sales and registered 56,254 units in June 2019.

While the TVS Jupiter did see a drop in sales, the numbers still hold strong. That’s really commendable during this slowdown. TVS even introduced the updated version of Jupiter ZX with an LED headlamp and a combo of digital and analogue instrumentation. That places the Jupiter fair and square against the Honda Activa 5G.

Prices for the TVS Jupiter begin at INR 52,945 (ex-showroom, Delhi) and you get to choose from a variety of colour options. Besides that, the features list includes an external fuel filler cap and a special easy use main stand. Volumes in June 2019 stood at 56,254 units in June 2019.

The rise of Suzuki Access 125 has been phenomenal. Volumes grew by 16% in the first quarter of FY 2019-20. In June 2019, volumes stood at 49,366 units which is a significant Y-o-Y growth from 38,338 units last year. Prices of the Suzuki Access 125 begin at INR 57,219 (ex-showroom, Delhi). The scooter boasts a large 21.5-litre under-seat storage, DC charging socket and a handy front pocket to store things.

Suzuki recently introduced a new colour option with a Limited Edition model of the Access 125. The Limited Edition variant is now offered in Metallic Matte Bordeaux, Metallic Sonic Silver, Metallic Matte Black and Pearl Mirage White.

Honda Dio: India’s most exported automatic scooter

2018 Honda Dio Deluxe press yellow
The Honda Dio continues to be India's most exported automatic scooter.

The guys at Honda 2Wheelers India managed to find 43,749 new buyers for Honda Dio in June 2019. The numbers have grown in the domestic market for the Dio but their trouble lies elsewhere. Dio continues to be largest exported automatic scooter from India but volumes dropped from more than 52,478 units in Q1 FY 2018-19 to just 29,756 units in FY 2019-20. Hopefully, things will be better in the next quarter for them.

The Honda Dio's prices begin at INR 53,218 (ex-showroom, Delhi). Some of its main features include LED headlamp, all-digital instrumentation and 4-in-1 lock with seat opening switch.

TVS NTorq: Smartness has a new name

TVS Ntorq 125 left side action first ride review
The sporty TVS NTorq is in the 5th spot in June 2019 with 21,738 new customers.

The TVS NTorq has climbed up to the 5th spot with 21,738 new customers in June 2019. The introduction of a drum brake variant has certainly helped in increasing the sales of the scooter. Features like connected instrumentation with navigation and call alerts are its USPs. Prices begin at INR 58,872 (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the entry-level drum brake variant.

At the heart of the TVS NTorq is a 124.79 cc engine producing 9.4 PS of power and 10.5 Nm of torque. TVS even introduced a new Matte Silver colour option in June 2019 which will hopefully help it further increase their sales. The TVS Ntorq competes with products like Honda Grazia, Aprilia SR125 and Hero Maestro Edge 125.

Yamaha Fascino Darknight Left Front Quarter
The Yamaha Fascino uses the tried and tested 113 cc mill which also does duty in the Yamaha Ray-Z.

Yamaha took the market with a storm when it launched the Fascino. The automatic scooter was styled to have a modern-retro theme. Volumes may have dropped in the past few months, and in June 2019 the numbers stood at 15,519 units. Yamaha has not updated the Fascino for quite some time and if better pull off a fast one if if wants to grab the market share.

The Hero Destini 125 registered a monthly sales of 11,292 units in June 2019. However, things look grim as volumes have kept dropping in the last few months. The scooter has a metal body, external fuel filler cap and side stand indicator. Besides that, it bears the i3S technology (start-stop system), which has previously been seen in the company's motorcycle range. The Hero Destini 125's prices begin at INR 55,580 (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Yamaha Ray-Z: Japanese sportiness

Yamaha Ray Z
