1st Gen: 1998 - 2003

Honda City’s first-generation model was sold in India between 1998 -2003 and was based on the sixth-generation Honda Civic (FERIO). 2nd Gen: 2003 - 2008

The second-generation Honda City was conceptualized on the Honda Jazz platform which was designed with fuel-tank being at the center of the car known as 'Centre tank-layout.' 3rd Gen: 2008 - 2013

The third generation was launched with a completely new look. The radical, Arrow-Shot styling was accepted very well by the customers. The all-new 1.5L i-VTEC engine became the biggest selling point. It also offered the best standard safety in its segment. With Dual Front Airbags and ABS with EBD as standard in all variants – it was far ahead of its times in the year 2008, 11 years before the regulation came in for all cars to be equipped with the same. 4th Gen: 2014 - 2020

With the 4th-gen City, launched in 2014, Honda introduced the 1.5L i-DTEC diesel engine along with the 1.5L i-VTEC petrol engine. 5th Gen: 2020 onwards

The New City e:HEV features Honda’s unique self-charging and highly efficient two-motor e-CVT hybrid system connected to a smooth 1.5-litre Atkinson-Cycle DOHC i-VTEC petrol engine, Intelligent Power Unit (IPU) with advanced Lithium-ion Battery and an Engine linked direct coupling Clutch. The e:HEV electric-hybrid system uses three driving modes - EV Drive, Hybrid Drive and Engine Drive, along with Regeneration mode during deceleration. In June 2021, Honda Cars India sold 4,767 units in the domestic market. In the corresponding period last year, the brand had registered only 1,398 units amidst operational restrictions of the COVID-led national lockdown. On the other hand, the company has exported 1,241 cars last month. In June 2020, the export numbers stood at just 142. For reference, in March 2021, Honda Cars India had sold 7,103 units in the country whereas, in April, the figure increased to 9,072; which is a growth of 27.7%.

Fastest cars in India under 20 lakhs – Kia Seltos

The first entry on our list of the fastest cars in India under 20 lakhs is the Kia Seltos. The compact SUV has been a consistent top seller since its launch, helping the South Korean automaker establish itself really quickly in the Indian auto market. The top of the line Seltos GT comes with a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine that makes 140 PS and 242 Nm of peak power and torque. The fifth-generation City’s design is an evolution of the last model with sleeker headlamps, redesigned front bumper, and a sculpted lip spoiler on the boot lid. The interior of the new City has been given a more noticeable upgrade with a new, premium dashboard with soft-touch panels and a touchscreen infotainment system with inbuilt Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Hyundai’s Grand i10 Nios is the third car on our list of fastest cars in India under 20 lakhs in India. The hatchback’s fastest variant is powered by a 1-litre turbo-petrol that makes 100 PS and 171 of peak power and torque figures. Other engine options include a 1.2-litre N/A petrol making 83 PS and 114 Nm peak power and torque and a 1.2-litre diesel that makes peak power and torque figures of 75 PS and 190 Nm, respectively. The turbo-petrol engine coupled with the Grand i10 Nios’ light weight gives it a good power-to-weight ratio, helping the hatchback post quick acceleration figures.

The turbo models of the second-generation Creta get projector headlights, a contrasting black coloured roof, rear spoiler, and diamond-cut alloy wheels. Moving to the interior, the Creta comes with features like a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, including a panoramic sunroof, wireless charger, ventilated front seats, automatic climate control, cruise control, an electronic parking brake, push-button start and more.

Ford Figo

The last entrant in our list on our list of fastest cars in India under 20 lakhs is the Ford Figo Sports Edition. The hatchback is powered by a 1.5-litre TDCi diesel engine that makes peak power and torque figures of 100 PS and 215 Nm, respectively. The Figo Sports Edition gets a few unique touches on the exterior like black headlamp surrounds, a black front grille, and dual-tone exteriors with dynamic graphics. Moving to the interior, the Figo Sports Edition gets a leather-wrapped steering wheel with red stitches, lunar grey interior applique, proteus black centre stack bezel, and single tone chrome black environment. The Ford Figo Sports edition comes with safety features like dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, engine immobilizer, keyless entry and perimeter alarm.

• Maximum Speed – 165-175 kmph

The Honda N7X concept carries a familiar Honda design language, already seen on the likes of the new City, HR-V and the CR-V. The front-end features a multi-slat chrome grille flanked by slim wraparound headlights. There is also a dual-LED DRL setup, with one LED DRL setup in the headlight cluster while the second one positioned below. The bumper has a wide air-dam, brushed aluminium inserts and a faux skid plate. Moving to the side, the N7X concept features a strong beltline that runs across the length of the SUV. The slightly flared wheel arches get black plastic cladding for a tough look while the wheels are silver multi-spoke units. The rear-end of the N7X concept gets horizontally placed wraparound taillights with LED elements. The SUV looks fairly production-ready, to be honest, even wearing production-ready panels.

Honda hasn’t revealed the interior of the N7X concept, but it is expected to be largely similar to the current City’s cabin. The SUV will be offered in both 6 and 7-seat layouts, with captain seats in the middle for the former. Honda claims that the new N7X was designed and developed while taking into account consumers in various markets including Indonesia. The Japanese automaker states that the N7X combines the best of MPVs and SUVs, able to tackle various road conditions without compromising on comfort and space.

Being based on the current Honda City, the production version of the Honda N7X concept will most likely be powered by the same 1.5-litre petrol engine that produces 123 PS and 145 Nm of peak power and torque. The automaker may also offer the 1-litre turbo-petrol which makes peak power and torque figures of 123 PS and 175 Nm. Transmission choices will include a 6-speed manual and a CVT automatic.

The Honda City is not the only model that has been affected by the price hike. In fact, Honda's entire lineup has seen an increment in price. The Honda Amaze has seen a price hike in the range of INR 7,000 - 12,000. Meanwhile, prices for the Honda Jazz have been hiked by INR 9,000. The prices for most variants of the WR-V remain unchanged, the base price has gone up by INR 7,000. Only the prices of the fourth-gen Honda City has remained unchanged.

The fifth-gen Honda City continues with the popularity it has always enjoyed in the Indian market. Although sales have been dismal in the C-segment sedan space recently, the Honda City has consistently been one of the best selling sedans in this space. The City was the top-selling C-Segment sedan in both January and February 2021. However, Honda City's sales in March 21 dropped 68% on a MoM basis to 815 units, as compared to 2,524 units sold in February 2021. The reason for such a steep decline is still unknown.

The fifth-gen Honda City gets two engine options under its hood - a 1.5L DOHC, four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine that produces 121hp and 145Nm of torque and a 1.5L dour-cylinder diesel engine that produces 100hp and 200Nm of torque. Both engines come mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard while the petrol engine is additionally offered with a CVT gearbox. One of the reason why the new City has grown to be so popular is that it is extremely well packaged.

It feels properly premium on the inside and is very well equipped with features such as an 8-inch touchscreen system, Alexa remote compatibility, a G-Force meter, Honda’s Lane Watch camera, Honda Connect telematics system with 32 connected car features, a 7.0-inch MID, cruise control, paddle shifters (CVT only), an electric sunroof, ambient lighting and more. The Honda City rivals the likes of the Hyundai Verna, Skoda Rapid, Volkswagen Vento and the  Maruti Suzuki Ciaz.

The recall will be carried out in a phased manner and has already started from April 17, 2021. The carmaker has released a detailed list of all the models that have been affected, including their production period and the number of units of each model that have been fitted with the faulty fuel pump. Barring the fifth-gen Honda City, the recall has affected every other Honda car in India. The vehicle most affected by this recall is the Honda Amaze with as many as 36,086 units fitted with the faulty fuel pump.

The recall also includes 20,248 units of the fourth-gen Honda City, 7,871 units of the WR-V, 6,235 units of the Jazz hatchback, 5,170 units of the Civic sedan, and 1,737 units of the BR-V. All these vehicles were manufactured between January and October 2019. Additionally, the recall also covers 607 units of the Honda CR-V that were manufactured between January 2019 and September 2020. It must be noted that the Honda CR-V, Civic and BR-V have been discontinued in India.

Vehicles manufactured before or after the above-mentioned time period do not have the suspected fuel pump issue. This recall could actually be a part of a global recall that Honda initiated in March 2021. Earlier last month, Honda had said that they will recall about 761,000 vehicles worldwide to replace fuel pumps that could fail and lead to engine problems. Given the current situation with the pandemic in the country, Honda dealers are operating with limited staff. Customers are advised to visit dealerships with prior appointment to adhere to pandemic protocols.

Honda's authorized dealer partners will be contacting the owners of the affected vehicles individually. The replacement of the part will be carried out free of cost to the customer. Additionally, owners can also check whether their cars are covered under this campaign by entering the 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the special microsite which has been created on the company's website.

Hyundai Creta

In its current generation, the Hyundai Creta packs a host of features. The Blue Link feature that debuted on the Venue compact SUV comes with added functionalities in the new Creta. This includes several in-car functions that can be controlled using a smartphone or a smartwatch. Functions including remotely starting the car, live tracking and real-time traffic information among others. Additional features in the car come in the form of a voice-enabled smart panoramic sunroof, drive mode select, traction control modes, Bose premium sound system packed with 8 speakers, air purifier and paddle shifters.

On the outside, the updated Creta gets a new grille, a new set of alloy wheels, and new colour options. In terms of powertrains, the new BS-VI options on the Creta include a 1.5-litre petrol engine and a 1.5-litre diesel engine that can be availed with either a 6-speed manual transmission or an automatic transmission. There is also a 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine available with a 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT). The car comes with three driving modes (Eco, Comfort & Sport) and traction control modes (Snow, Sand & Mud) that are aimed to optimise driving across different terrains.

Honda City

There's still a big market for sedan buyers in India and one segment that people appreciate is the mid-size sedan, their entry level vehicle for chauffeur driven vehicles. After the launch of its successor, Honda also launched the fourth-gen City only in two variants: SV and V. Both the new gen and old gen models can now be bought in India basis of your need. The new gen model gets some segment first features like Alexa Voice integration among others. In India, the car takes on the likes of Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Skoda Rapid, Volkswagen Vento, Toyota Yaris and Hyundai Verna.

The Honda City is available with both the 1.5-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engine options while the old City only has a petrol motor that outputs 119 PS and 145 Nm of torque through a 5-speed manual transmission. The new City also offers CVT automatic option. In terms of features, the City still stands as a worthy contender in the sedan segment with inclusions such as auto AC, touchscreen infotainment system, height-adjustable driver’s seat and power-folding ORVMs, sunroof, leather interior, and LED headlamps. Safety features in the car include dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors.

Kia Seltos

No arguments here as the Kia Seltos is easily one of the best looking SUVs out there. Unlike the Tata Harrier brings sheer size to the table, the Seltos sports sharp lines and crystal-like LED lighting to ground a solid road presence. The car sits on a set of 17-inch wheels, which comes with a red-brake calliper in the GT Line variant. The Korean manufacturer has built the Seltos in accordance with global standards making it feature-laden up to the brim. In addition to the standard features that are now a common thread among all SUVs, the Seltos gets a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, an 8-speaker Bose sound system with sound mood lighting, electric sunroof, a 7-inch LCD multi-info display (MID) in the instrument cluster, automatic climate control, ventilated seats, and reclinable second row with a USB charger.

Like the BLuelink in Hyundai Venue, the Kia Seltos ships with UVO connect that works with the help of an e-SIM embedded in the infotainment unit enabling features such as starting the SUV remotely with the help of a smartphone, start the AC, track the car’s location, set geofencing, time-fence, speed, valet and idle. The Kia Seltos comes with a wide range of engine and transmission options. There is a 1.5-litre petrol engine that comes mated to a CVT, a diesel engine outputting through a 6-speed torque converter. The company is also offering a 6-speed manual with all the 1.5-litre offerings, both in petrol as well as diesel. In addition to this, the ace of the deck is the new 1.4-litre Turbo GDI petrol motor that is offered with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Hyundai i20

If you are looking for a fully loaded and powerful smaller car under INR 15 lakh, the new i20 is your best bet. In its new avatar, the i20 comes with features loaded to the brim. The car now comes with Hyundai’s Blue Link connectivity system that comes along with 50+ connected features along with OTA updates. The new version gets 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay. Also on offer are 7 speaker Bose sound system, sunroof, a wireless phone charger, ambient lighting and much more.

In terms of safety, the car gets 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, vehicle stability management and hill start assist, to name a few. The diesel option in question is a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder unit that is also present in the Venue. As of now, Hyundai only provides the engine with a 6-speed manual gearbox in the new i20. The unit delivers 99 bhp at 4000 rpm and 240 Nm at 1500 rpm. In terms of petrol powertrain, the car gets a 1.2-litre 82 bhp at 6000 rpm and 115 Nm at 4200 rpm. However, there's also a more exciting 1.0-litre turbo engine to avail as well.

Mahindra Thar

Mahindra launched the second-gen Thar to an eager crowd. In its second generation, the new Thar comes with two engine options – a 2.0-litre mStallion TGDi Petrol engine and a 2.2-litre mHawk Diesel engine. These will be available with the choice of a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission and a 6-speed manual transmission mated to an authentic manual shift-on-the-fly 4x4 transfer case. Mahindra has also come out with three roof options that include a Hard Top, a first-in-class Convertible Top and an optional Soft Top. In addition to this, one can have the Mahindra Thar in two seating options - 4 front-facing seats and 2+4 side-facing seat configuration.

In an attempt to make the car a bit more appealing to a wider audience, the Thar has been updated with modern features like a drizzle-resistant 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The Thar will also come with cruise control, roof-mounted speakers and adventure statistics displays. It has got an update in terms of safety too as it gets things like ABS with EBD, dual airbags, ESP with rollover mitigation, hill-hold and hill descent control. There are a total of 13 variants to choose from, depending on engine, gearbox, roof type and features. Designed and engineered in India and manufactured out of Mahindra’s Nashik Plant, the all-new Thar is available in 6 colour options - Red Rage, Mystic Copper, Napoli Black, Aquamarine, Galaxy Grey and Rocky Beige.

Hyundai Creta

The mid-SUV from Korean carmaker happens to be the best-selling SUV in the country, even outpacing cars cheaper than the Creta. In its second generation now, the Hyundai Creta has been a popular choice among SUV buyers ever since it was first introduced 5 years back and remains a top seller despite increase in competition. In its new avatar, it gets a completely new design and features like a sunroof, wireless charging, BlueLink Connected Suite among others.

Hyundai offers the new Creta with a 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine, available with a 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT). The other powertrain options include a 1.5-litre petrol engine and a 1.5-litre diesel engine that can be availed with either a 6-speed manual transmission or an automatic transmission. The Hyundai Creta's prices start at INR 9.99 lakh* in the Indian market. It goes up against the likes of the Kia Seltos, Tata Harrier and MG Hector.

Tata Safari

Tata Motors has reintroduced the Safari brand in India renaming the Gravitas SUV, which was an extended version of the Harrier and now gets a third row of seating. The Tata Safari carries the same Harrier looks with considerable change in the roofline, increased height and enlarged rear overhang. In terms of length, the Safari is longer and taller than the Harrier by 63 mm and 80 mm, respectively. While the new Safari's dashboard design is similar to the Harrier, it gets Oyster White upholstery, electrically adjustable driver’s seat, panoramic sunroof and electronic handbrake as some changes.

When it comes to the engine, the Tata Safari is powered by the same 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine like Harrier. This engine can produce 170 bhp of power and 350 Nm of torque. It is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed auto gearbox. It is initially being offered only as two-wheel drive SUV, while the Four-wheel drive and electric versions are in the offing in future. The prices of the Tata Safari starts at INR 14.69 Lakh*.

Honda City

In a world of SUVs, it’s a surprise that a sedan has made it to our list. Truth be told, there are many buyers who don’t want to go for a sedan against a SUV. Having said that, mid-size sedans still hold a charm among buyers who want themselves to be chauffeur driven, or still see sedans as more upmarket than SUVs. Also, due to added boot space, practicality is also a factor that pushes buyers for mid-size sedans and the Honda City is one such product. The new city is being offered with petrol and diesel engine options, both 1.5 litre units.

Apart from the engine itself, the Honda City promises class leading cabin space and mileage, making it a promising product. Features wise, the Honda City gets latest Honda infotainment system with touchscreen and Alexa Voice Commands, automatic climate control, among many other features. The 5^th gen Honda City goes up against the likes of Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Hyundai Verna and Toyota Yaris and has a starting price of INR 10.99 lakh*.

MG Hector

The MG Hector was introduced as India’s first Internet Car and recently got an update alongside an additional 7-seater model under the Hector Plus moniker. There are three seating options – a 5-seater, a 6-seater with captain seats and a 7-seater with bench type seat in the middle row. MG, however, calls the third row seating of the 6 and 7 seater variants apt only for kids and not adults, especially for longer travel periods. Both these 3^rd row seaters are sold under the Hector Plus brand name, but essentially carries everything from the Hector itself. The pricing of the SUV starts at INR 12.89 Lakh*.

The Hector comes with updated features like automatic tailgate, panoramic sunroof, a Chit-Chat i-SMART Next Gen interface, a 10.4-inch touchscreen infotainment and tyre pressure monitoring system along with exiting feature list. Engine wise, there’s 1.5-litre petrol engine and a 2.0-litre diesel engine on offer. The petrol engine also gets a mild hybrid variant. MG is offering a manual and a DCT gearbox alongside a recently added CVT unit. Hector is the brand’s first offering in India and is priced reasonably, considering the amount of features it offers.

Mahindra Thar

Last on our list of best cars under 20 Lakh in India is the Mahindra Thar SUV. It’s a bit of unconventional product in the long list of urban SUVs and sedans, especially considering its best suited for 2 adults and is more of a lifestyle vehicle. However, given the kind of waiting period it is commanding in the market, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that the new Thar is giving a hard fight to conventional cars. The all-new model was recently launched wearing a completely new skin, added features and new cabin design, new set of engines and much more.

The new Thar gets a 2.0-litre petrol and a 2.2 diesel engine option, while there’s a manual and automatic gearbox options to choose from in both the engine options. The Thar gets 4WD system as standard in is available in LX and AX variant lineup. There’s also a choice between hard top, fixed soft top, and removable soft top to choose from.
