Can Bajaj Pulsar NS160 Beat Yamaha MT-15 in Top-End Drag Race? https://indianautosblog.com/bajaj-pulsar-ns160-yamaha-mt-15-drag-race-p323868 Fri, 11 Jun 2021 10:45:41 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=323868 The Bajaj Pulsar NS160 receives direct competition from the Yamaha MT-15. Both these naked motorcycles not only score well when it comes to looks, but they also pack in some good performance. For reference, the NS160 has 17.2 PS of max power whereas the MT-15’s engine churns out 18.5 PS. Wouldn’t it be interesting to see which one of these models would win in a top-end drag race? Well, the video below shows just that.

The footage has been uploaded by YouTuber “Rough rider azam”. It shows us two drag races between the Bajaj Pulsar NS160 and Yamaha MT-15. We can see that in the first attempt, the MT-15 gets a phenomenal launch which helps it to create a good gap from the NS160. The Yamaha continues to gain speed and during the entire race manages to touch a top speed of 134 kmph. On the other hand, the Pulsar NS160 rider tries to catch up with the MT-15 using slipstream, however, he isn’t close enough. He manages to achieve a top speed of 130 kmph but fails to win the race.

For the second drag race attempt, the riders switch motorcycles. We can see in the video that this time, both bikes get off the mark almost together. But it is the Yamaha MT-15 that once again takes the lead. The gap between the two motorcycles increases gradually and there’s no chance for the Pulsar NS160 to get back into the race. The MT-15 reaches a top speed of 132 kmph whereas the Pulsar hovers between 127-130 kmph. Eventually, it is the Yamaha that wins the second race as well.

Bajaj Pulsar Ns160 Front Three Quarter

Clearly, the MT-15’s slightly more power helps it to achieve a higher top speed. However, it isn’t the only reason behind its victory. At 138kg, the Yamaha is much lighter than the Pulsar NS160 that tips the scale at 151kg.

The Bajaj Pulsar NS160 is currently available in 3 colour options - Metallic Pearl White, Burnt Red, and Pewter Grey - and costs INR 1,11,962*. On the other hand, the Yamaha MT-15 retails at a starting price of INR 1,40,900* which will get you either the Dark Matte Blue or Metallic Black colour option. The funky and more attractive Ice Fluo-Vermillion livery will set you back by INR 1,41,900*.

Yamaha MT-15 to Get Dual-Channel ABS, Type Approval Doc Suggests https://indianautosblog.com/yamaha-mt-15-dual-channel-abs-under-development-p323168 Tue, 13 Apr 2021 07:45:49 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=323168 The braking hardware of the Yamaha MT-15 includes a 282mm front and a 220mm rear rotor aided by a single-channel ABS. Now, based on a new Type Approval document, the Japanese two-wheeler giant is likely to add a dual-channel ABS in the naked streetfighter to enhance its braking performance.

Yamaha Mt 15 Dual Channel Abs Type Approval Doc
This is the Type Approval document that contains the information suggesting the inclusion of a dual-channel ABS in the Yamaha MT-15.

We can see in the Type Approval document image attached above that the “nature of change” mentioned in the paperwork is “addition of make of ABS wheel sensor” and the “base model” is “Yamaha MT-15”. This indicates that Yamaha is planning to implement some changes in the ABS of the MT-15 and, most probably, these alterations are nothing but the inclusion of a dual-channel ABS.

It’s to be noted that the Yamaha R15 v3.0 already has a dual-channel ABS. Hence, adding the same to the MT-15 shouldn’t be a big hassle for the Japanese company. The updated system will improve the braking performance by providing better stability and control at all speeds without any wheel lockups and skidding even in slippery conditions.

If the Yamaha MT-15 gets a dual-channel ABS, the motorcycle would also receive a price hike. Expect an increase of around INR 3000 - INR 4000. The current model is available at INR 1,40,900* for the Metallic Black and Dark Matte Blue colour options whereas the Ice Fluo-Vermillion paint scheme will set you back by INR 1,41,900*.

In terms of features, the Yamaha MT-15 has bi-functional LED headlights, a fully-digital instrument cluster with a negative display, 140mm wide rear tyre, side-stand engine cut-off, stylish LED taillamp, aggressive front look, and more. The motorcycle draws power from a 155cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine that comes equipped with Yamaha’s VVA technology. All three bikes offer attractive styling, good design, and various interesting features. They are also known for their peppy performance. So when we stumbled upon a Pulsar NS200 vs MT-15 vs 200 Duke top-end race video, we had to share it with you guys.

Before diving into the race, let’s have a look at the specs of the motorcycles in question. The Pulsar NS200 has 24.5PS/18.5Nm. Its Austrian cousin, the 200 Duke has 26hp/19.5Nm. And the Yamaha MT-15 is the least powerful here. The Japanese streetfighter has 18.5PS/13.9Nm.

Max torque 18.5Nm 19.5Nm 13.9Nm
Transmission 6-speed 6-speed 6-speed

With the specs aside, we would also like to have a look at the weight of the three motorcycles. At 156kg, the Pulsar NS200 is the heaviest. On the other hand, the MT-15 weighs 138kg and, thus, is the lightest. The KTM 200 Duke takes the middle ground with a weight of 140kg.

Now, let’s get into the race. We can see in the video that in both attempts, the Yamaha MT-15 is the quickest off the mark. The Japanese machine is capable to take the lead and create a good gap from its rivals. While the KTM 200 Duke tries to keep up, it fails and falls behind. Coming out on top is the Pulsar NS200. Even though it isn’t the quickest of the lot, it has got a good top-end grunt and, thus, manages to catch up with the MT-15 in the long run and finally takes the lead and wins the race.

It’s surprising to see that even though the MT-15 is the least powerful, it manages to defeat the 200 Duke and secures 2nd place. We were not expecting this to happen. Perhaps, its light weight worked in its favour. We were also surprised to see how far behind the KTM was left out.

Apart from meeting the upcoming emission norms, the motorcycle has gained a new Ice Fluo Vermillion colour now, a shade similar to the Matte Grey option retailed in Indonesia and Thailand. The new shade of the MT-15 will be retailed with red alloy wheels. Also new is a new radial tyre at the rear.

Bs Vi Yamaha Mt 15 Side Profile
The BS-VI compliant Yamaha MT-15 will be sold in a new Ice Fluo Vermillion paint scheme as well.

Powering the BS-VI Yamaha MT-15 is the same 155 cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled mill which does duty in the BS-VI Yamaha R15 v3.0. Specs aren't out yet, but we expect them to match those of the fully-faired model's unit - 18.6 PS at 10,000 rpm and 14.1 Nm at 8500 rpm. The BS-IV version produces 19.3 PS of maximum power and 14.7 Nm of maximum torque.

Cycle parts of the BS-VI MT-15 are the same as the BS-IV model. The suspension includes the same conventional telescopic fork up front and monoshock at the rear with adjustable preload. Braking duties include discs at both ends. However, just like the BS-IV version, the motorcycle continues to be shod with a single-channel ABS.

The Yamaha MT-15 has gained a side stand engine cut-off switch as well, a feature also present in the new Fascino 125 FI. Reverse backlit instrumentation, assist and slipper clutch and LED headlamp are some of the main carried over features.

The Yamaha MT-15 is one of the most expensive motorcycles in the 150-160 cc segment but it offers the rider class-leading power and acceleration figures. It is a fine example of how India Yamaha Motor has changed a global model to meet the Indian market needs. For example, the global version of the MT-15 sold in ASEAN region features an upside-down fork up front and an aluminium swingarm (India gets the bike with a box-type swingarm).

Unlike the old Yamaha MT-15, the new model features a radial rear tyre.

The commercial launch of the BS-VI Yamaha MT-15 will likely happen in January.
