7 Ways In Which The MG Hector Disrupted The Market On Its Debut https://indianautosblog.com/mg-hector-top-7-strengths-p323875 Wed, 07 Jul 2021 06:30:19 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=323875 It may not seem like a long time ago, but its already been two years since MG Motor launched the Hector SUV in India. At launch, the Hector was a runaway success for MG Motor, marking a strong debut for the iconic British brand in India. It regularly topped the sales charts in its segment for several months and there were many reasons that helped it do so. On the second anniversary of the MG Hector in India, we are revisiting 7 reasons that helped MG cause a disruption in the market with the Hector, all of which is relevant even today.

Best-in-Class Space

We have to start with what immediately impressed us the most about the Hector at first glance, and that's its size and space. The Hector measures 4,655mm in length, which made it the longest SUV in its class then, and it is so even today. It also has the best-in-class wheelbase of 2,750mm, which makes it extremely spacious on the inside. The second-row of the Hector has space for even the largest of adults and seating three in the back seat couldn't be more comfortable. Not only that, the Hector also a massive boot of 587 litres. Fold the second-row seats flat, and you could easily move houses in this.

OTA and Voice Guided Operation

The Hector comes with AI-based voice recognition feature that can control functions such as operating the windows, AC, navigation, sunroof and many more. While there are many cars with voice command function, what makes the Hector stand out in the Indian context is that it can even identify 'Hinglish' commands such as 'Radio Chalao', 'Sunroof Kholo' and much more. The Hector also comes fitted with an M2M module which keeps it connected to the internet constantly. The iSmart connected system comes with features such as geo-fencing, live location updates to the user's phone and can even pick up system updates and upgrade the software just as we do with our smartphones. With this, you can even use an app on your phone to operate the climate control externally or start/stop the engine right from your phone.

Huge Panoramic Sunroof

The iSmart connected car tech wasn't the only first-in-segment feature that the Hector came with. MG threw everything they possibly could at their debut model in India, and the Hector was thus fully-loaded to its gills. One of biggest highlight has to be the huge panoramic sunroof, which made the Hector the only SUV in its class and price range to offer this feature when it was launched. Other standout features include the 10.4-inch vertically oriented touchscreen, 8 colour ambient lighting, reclining rear seats, a huge panoramic sunroof, 360-degree camera, LED projector headlamps and fog lamps, heated ORVMs and much, many of which were unheard of in this segment and at this price.

Mg Hector Facelift 3
Earlier this year, MG updated the Hector with new colors for the upholstery and some additional new features.

Mild Hybrid Powertrain

One of the biggest strengths of the MG Hector is its wide range of powertrain options. The Hector is available with both petrol and diesel engines. The petrol engine is a 1.5L turbo-petrol unit that produces 143hp and 250Nm of torque. This engine comes mated to either a 6-speed manual, an 8-step CVT or a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission, which was another segment-first feature at the time. Meanwhile, the 2.0L turbo-diesel engine produces 170hp and 350Nm of torque and is solely offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox. However, what was standout for the Hector was the 48V mild-hybrid system that was offered as an optional feature with the 1.5L petrol engine. The Hector is still the only SUV in its segment with a mild-hybrid powertrain. The 1.5L mild-hybrid petrol engine is offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox option.

Butch Looks

Okay, styling might be subjective, but it has to be admitted that the Hector did turn a lot of heads on its arrival- firstly, due to its sheer size, and secondly, due to the flashy and chrome-heavy styling. With a subtle facelift earlier this year, MG even fixed a few niggles with the original design. The wheels grew a size larger, something that greatly helped the stance and proportions of the SUV, and the slight tweaks to the chrome grille made it look a little sharper and that much more appealing.

Mg Hector Front Quarter
With the subtle facelift earlier this year, MG fixed a few niggles with the original design of the Hector.

Best-In-Class Warranty With MG Shield

One of the biggest contributing factors to a vehicle's success apart from the product itself is the ownership experience it offers. As part of its MG Shield after-sales package, MG offered the Hector with with a 5-year/unlimited km warranty as standard, which by the way is the best in the segment. It also comes with 5-years/ unlimited kilometers road-side assistance and 5 labour free services. Even the 12V/48V batteries get a 1-year warranty while the 10.4-inch touch infotainment system gets a 3-year warranty. Along with a great warranty scheme, MG also offered a guaranteed 60% buyback scheme with the Hector. What that means is that MG will buy back the Hector from you at 60% of the original ex-showroom price of the SUV after 3 years of ownership. There are, however, a few clauses to this plan and it needs to be bought during the purchase of the car.

Pricing

Most importantly, for any product to be successful in a price-sensitive market such as India, it has to be priced right. And MG got that bang on right from the start. When the Hector was launched in 2019, it was priced between INR 12.18 - 16.88 lakh, which was tremendous value for money for what it was offering. The MG Hector scored where it mattered for Indians - feature-rich interior, tons of space, frugal engines and of course, a wow factor. Currently, the MG Hector has been priced between 13.17 - 18.85 lakh (ex-showroom), the premium coming from the updates it has received over its lifetime and is still amazing value for money.

The total number of MG cars sold last month in the domestic market is more than three times the figure the company had recorded in May 2021.

MG Motor India retailed 3558 units last month, recording a three-fold rise from 1016 units sold in May 2021. The production levels are impacted in June and will remain so in July-August due to the global shortage of semiconductor chips. Speaking on the brand’s sales performance, Mr. Rakesh Sidana, Director – Sales, MG Motor India, said:

We are seeing early signs of positive consumer sentiment in June and potential purchases due to pent-up demand, which was on hold due to the pandemic. Even though some markets are still under lockdown, the ramping up of the vaccination drive has given us hope and we expect the demand to increase during the festival season. However, we have to remain cautious of the potential threat posed by the third wave.

MG Hector, Hector Plus (6- and 7-seater), ZS EV, and Gloster are the products that MG Motor India currently has on sale in the country. The Hector range is available from a starting price of INR 13.17 lakh. On the other hand, the MG Gloster price begins from around INR 29.98 lakh. Here's First MG Hector To Be Fitted With A CNG Kit - VIDEO https://indianautosblog.com/this-is-the-first-mg-hector-in-india-to-be-fitted-with-a-cng-kit-video-p323709 Sun, 30 May 2021 08:30:59 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=323709 MG Motors entered the Indian automotive market in 2019 with the Hector. The compact SUV was an instant hit among consumers as it offered a combination of feature-loaded trim levels and unique looks at value-for-money prices. Though it is only two years old in the Indian auto market, MG decided to give the Hector a mid-life facelift that added a host of features and a few exterior changes. Today we came across this Hector which has been fitted with an aftermarket CNG kit.

The video has been uploaded by vishwas auto gas cng on YouTube. This MG Hector is a pre-facelift model, and the video shows us the installation of the regulators, injectors, low-pressure hose, high-pressure hose, solenoid and refilling valve in the vehicle. The CNG cylinder is placed on the boot, which compromises the SUV’s luggage space. The video then shows a gas level indicator being installed in the Hector’s cabin next to the steering wheel. Being an aftermarket unit, the owner of the MG Hector had to forego the vehicle’s warranty as it violates the company’s conditions. The video doesn’t clarify whether this is a Hector petrol or diesel. Furthermore, there is no mention of the total cost of the modification.

One of the biggest benefits of fitting a CNG kit to your vehicle is that CNG is quite a bit cheaper to run on than petrol or diesel, especially given the current sky-high prices of the latter two. If one would like to convert their vehicle to run on CNG, it is advisable that one installs a CNG kit in a car that has been approved/certified by the appropriate authorities for safety reasons.

Mg Hector Cng Kit Modification
This is probably the first MG Hector to be fitted with an CNG kit

Coming to the vehicle, prices for the MG Hector range between Rs 13.17 lakh – Rs 18.85 lakh, ex-showroom. The SUV comes loaded with features like a 10.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system with integrated Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 6-way adjustable powered front seat, a panoramic sunroof, rain-sensing wipers, ambient lighting, ventilated front seats, heated ORVMs, wireless charging, cruise control, and a powered tailgate.

Powertrain choices for the MG Hector include 1 petrol and 1 diesel engine. The 1.5-litre turbo petrol makes 143 PS and 250 Nm of peak power and torque. The Diesel is a 2-litre unit that churns out max power and torque figures of 170 PS and 350 Nm, respectively. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual, a 6-speed DCT, and a CVT automatic. The petrol engine is also available with a 48V mild-hybrid system, but can only be mated to the manual.

This is testified by the fact that some existing MG Hector owners have further upgraded to either the Hector 2021 (facelift) and some, even the larger MG Hector Plus models. More importantly, both customer bases have realized over 95% resale value for their old Hector SUV, another testament to how well Hector has been received in India.

Mg Hector To Hector 2021 Upgrade Images
In just two years, MG Motor India has built a loyal customer base in India, with the MG Hector range enjoying fantastic resale value in the market.

In the first instance, a pre-facelift MG Hector owner upgraded to the 2021 MG Hector facelifted model, realizing 96% resale value for his pre-facelift model. The customer moved from the top-spec Sharp trim of the pre-facelift model to the Sharp trim of the 2021 facelifted model, paying just INR 1.69 lakh extra to take home the new version. As for the brand, they were successful in retaining a customer in the MG family. Earlier this year, MG Motor introduced a mid-life facelift for the Hector, and the aforementioned customer, already being a fan of the brand, was obviously tempted to upgrade to the new model.

As part of its 2021 update, MG Motor introduced a new chrome-studded design for the grille which gives the Hector a far more premium and upmarket feel. The carmaker also upgraded the 17-inch wheels of the pre-facelift model to a new 5-split-spoke dual-tone 18-inch design, which really improved the stance of the SUV. The red reflective strip connecting the tail lamps at the rear was also replaced by a new black insert. Inside, MG introduced a new dual-tone black-and-beige upholstery theme, giving it a much more luxurious feel. It also saw the addition of several new features such as wireless charging, ventilated seats for both driver and front passenger, auto-dimming IRVMs and even an updated i-SMART system with industry-first Hinglish voice command function.

MG Motor India Sells 2,565 Units in April 2021- Registers 53% Decline https://indianautosblog.com/mg-motor-india-april-2021-sales-p323399 Sat, 08 May 2021 13:00:33 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=323399 It’s been a while since MG Motor started its operations in India. MG cars are fairly popular among buyers for their aggressive price tags and feature-laden cabins. Right now, the carmaker offers only a handful of models in our market, and all of them are doing quite well in their respective segments. Back in March 2021, the carmaker sold 5,528 units in India, which is MG’s highest-ever monthly sales volume. These sales figures are quite impressive considering that like several other carmakers, MG Motor India is also facing a shortage of semiconductor chips.

Many cities in India entered into a lockdown situation in mid-April. This means that the carmakers across India could not do business as usual. Many automakers have also halted the production. MG Motor has its manufacturing plant in Gujarat, and when the second wave hit, the carmaker scaled down its overall output. Thanks to all these challenges, the carmaker could sell only 2,565 units in April 2021, which corresponds to a sales decline of 53 per cent as compared to March 2021.

That said, it's worth a mention here that right now, MG Motor India has been focusing more on serving the communities during these hard times. The automaker has decided to close the plant for seven days and reserve the industrial oxygen and get it redirected to the healthcare segment. In a recent statement, the carmaker said, "Going forward, the carmaker does not see any deterioration in demand. However, supply-chain constraints would continue in May 2021. The production will be impacted by the shortage of semiconductor chips globally and the limitation in working hours due to curfews and lockdowns in various parts of the country.”

Top 10 SUVs in India With Best Road Presence - Fortuner, Harrier and More https://indianautosblog.com/top-10-suvs-in-india-with-best-road-presence-p323242 Sun, 25 Apr 2021 11:00:32 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=323242 Indians have a special affinity towards SUVs and that can be seen given the rising number of products launched in this segment and also the sheer volume they are enjoying. While practicality is one aspect of owning a SUV, most people are actually looking for the road-presence these cars offer, which not only elevates the whole ownership experience but also elevates the status-symbol, one which SUVs are famous for providing. Hence we list down top 10 SUVs you can buy in India with the best road-presence.

Toyota Fortuner

2021 Toyota Fortuner Facelift And Legender
For 2021, Toyota launched the Fortuner with a new facelift and a new Legender variant.

For its 2021 update, Toyota has graced the new Fortuner with a handful of design tweaks making it more appealing in the full-size SUV segment. The 2021 model comes with a new grille, larger ‘inlets’ behind the fog lights, new DRLs on its chin and a wider scuff plate. Meanwhile, there's a new Legender that gets its own unique styling. Shaper and more rakish looking, the narrow ‘grille’ and deep air dam make it look seriously appealing. And the Legender also gets a two-tone paint job.

Ford Endeavour

Update after update, the Ford Endeavour has changed very little.

Update after update, the Ford Endeavour has changed very little. The SUV received a mild facelift a couple of years back. Hence, its switch to BS6 does not see any cosmetic changes. With a keen sight, you can spot that the headlamps now get square projector units instead of the round unit from the previous version. That’s because they now hold LED elements! The proud engine badge on the side fender which had the letters ‘3.2’ embossed in bold now just states the name of the SUV. Other than that, everything else is the same.

Isuzu D-Max V-Cross

In India, we will continue with the last-gen Isuzu D-Max V-Cross even with its BS6 update.

While we are still waiting on the 2021 model, the 2019 model facelift is currently on sale with a new front-end design that looked a lot more aggressive than fit the overall persona of the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross a lot better. This new look can be credited to several new elements like the new bumper which is beefier than before and is now complemented by sharper-looking fog lamp housings which get a dash of chrome. The lights also have new L-shaped LED Daytime Running lights which add to the aggressive look even more. Laterally, the car continues with its butch appeal with its 18-inch alloy wheels and a side step-board that sits more flush than before and there’s a new shark-fin antenna that’s included in the package too.

Citroen C5 Aircross

Citroen C5 Aircross Front Quarter Right
Citroen's first product in India is coming via the CKD route and is being locally assembled at Citroen's plant in Thiruvallur, Tamil Nadu.

Citroen’s entry into the Indian SUV segment with the C5 Aircross was a wise choice. In terms of design, the car is dressed to the teeth with elements that stand out in the sea of SUVs in India. For instance, there is no logo stuck or screwed onto the front grille or bonnet; the front grille itself turns into the brand logo. The side body cladding goes notably higher up on the door than we’ve seen on most SUVs as well. In addition to this, it also gets oval accents to make the style stand out more. Even the C-shaped chrome garnish on the window line is a very cool touch, complemented by 18-inch alloys that’d look right at home on a concept car.

Tata Harrier

The Harrier SUV was the first vehicle to feature Tata’s IMPACT Design 2.0 philosophy. At the front, the car gets a dual-tone bumper with a satin silver chin guard, xenon HID projector headlamps and dual function LED DRLs with turn indicators. The SUV gets flared wheel arches that house 5-spoke alloy wheels. It has a high shoulder line and blacked-out B pillars, while the C-pillar houses a triangular quarter glass. At the rear, the Harrier has a raked windshield, a spoiler and 3D LED taillamps with a sporty piano black finisher. The dual-tone rear bumper gets silver inserts.

MG Hector

The 2021 facelift brings in a set of larger, 18-inch wheels which better suit the stance of the Hector.

The MG Hector pretty much outsizes everything in its class. It comes as the lengthiest SUV with the largest wheelbase amongst its rivals, though the narrow girth and excessive rear overhang do throw proportions off a bit. The 2021 facelift brings in a set of larger, 18-inch wheels which better suit the stance of the Hector. A generous use of chrome means the Hector is big on bling and elements like the split LED DRLs and headlamps set up ensure the MG grabs attention.

Mahindra Thar

2020 Mahindra Thar Front 3 Quarters
The Mahindra Thar now strikes a perfect balance between off-road ability and practicality.

It’s difficult to strike a balance between pleasing the aficionados and making your product a mass-market one. But somehow Mahindra managed to nail it with the new Thar. Every panel is now chunkier, the new 18-inch wheels have been very smartly designed, and the car itself has grown in terms of length (+65mm), width (129mm) and wheelbase (+20mm). But despite all the modern elements, it retains various old-school elements. Even the front grille adds some retro and draws inspiration from the old Mahindra Armada Grand. The base AX variant features a fixed soft top as standard, while the top-end LX can be had with either a fixed hardtop or a convertible soft top. The latter two can be fitted to the base variant as options.

Hyundai Creta

2020 Hyundai Creta Images Front Profile Blue 1
Although striking to look at, the new Hyundai Creta still divides opinion on its styling.

The 2020 Hyundai Creta comes with a brand new design on the outside that falls in line with the same language that began with the Venue. Upfront, there is a massive hexagonal grille that is outlined by a chrome strip that looks a tad too shiny. Then you have the ice cube three-element LED headlamps that look stylish with the LED DRLs sitting on top of them. The boot gets a bulge that makes the rear section look muscular and the black stripe that connects the tail lamps help the Creta look unique. On the sides, the flared wheel arches add some muscle and the sloping roofline makes it look stylish. The alloy wheel design on the diesel car is the usual Hyundai affair - sharply cut and sporty.

Kia Sonet

Kia Sonet Images Front Three Quarters Action 2
Kia will soon roll out an update on the Sonet with new logo and features.

Kia has done a skillful job in burying the same platform that it shares with the Hyundai Venue. It dresses to impress with a large bonnet and stubby rear end. The overhangs on the Sonet are larger than that of the Venue. In the top-rung variants, one is treated to full-LED headlamps with integrated daytime running lamps that double as turn indicators. Elements such as the wide grille (with a sweet knurled chrome outline) and the creases on the hood paired with the flared wheel arches give the Sonet much needed visual muscle. There are some intricate details you’d appreciate, like the chrome surround for the projector fog lamps and the layered pattern on the grille that Kia says is inspired by the stepwells of ancient India.

MG Gloster

Mg Gloster Front 3 Quarters Right
The MG Gloster has a very commanding street presence, thanks to its huge size.

The Gloster is built on MG’s ladder-frame chassis and measures 5,005mm in length, 1,932mm in width and 1,875mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,950mm. The car was at display during last year’s Auto Expo and a few design cues included an octagonal grille with chrome slats, LED headlamps with DRLs, fog lamps with round chrome bezel and a sculpted bumper and hood. Also on offer are a set of dual-tone alloy wheels, bold shoulder creases, chrome around the window line, chrome door handles, LED tail-lights and roof rails.
