This one-off model may look like a standard Superb on the outside, but it packs a serious punch under the hood.

Skoda Superb Sleeper Edition Front Quarter

Based on the top-spec 'L&K 4x4' variant, the Superb Sleeper Edition features a heavily upgraded 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged engine. These upgrades boost the power output to a staggering 470 BHP and 661 Nm of torque—nearly double the standard model's 270 BHP and 350 Nm. This power surge is thanks to a larger Garrett Powermax turbocharger, a bigger intercooler, and a revised fuel system. Additionally, Skoda has equipped it with a bespoke exhaust downpipe and centre section, while cleverly retaining the factory-fitted exhaust box to maintain its sleeper status.

To complement the power, the Superb Sleeper Edition is fitted with KW coilover suspension, lowering the ride height by 50mm, and AP Racing disc brakes with bright red six-pot calipers. These subtle modifications are the only visual hints of the car's enhanced performance.

Skoda Superb Sleeper Edition Rear Quarter

Finished in a Royal Green Metallic paint scheme with luxurious Cognac leather upholstery, this one-off model is not for sale. It's Skoda’s way of celebrating the Mk3 Superb, blending performance with subtlety in a truly unique package.

The DSG gear selector has been moved to the steering column, now giving front passengers more space, while a roomy centre console offers more storage.

Enhancing onboard operation, the customisable Škoda Smart Dials allow for easy control. Each rotary push-button provides intuitive access to various vehicle functions, and a digital display ensures a quick, comprehensive overview at any time. In a move toward greater sustainability, Škoda now uses upholstery made from 100% recycled polyester for both the new Kodiaq and Superb.

Innovative new features for even more comfort onboard

Škoda has redesigned the interiors of both upcoming models, including enhancements to the steering wheel, instrument cluster, dashboard, and decorative trim. A Škoda first: the gear selector has moved to the steering column in both models, making it particularly accessible. As a result, the centre console has a tidy, clearly structured layout, opening up additional space for the front passengers.

Other firsts in the Kodiaq and the Superb include a head-up display complementing the 10-inch Virtual Cockpit, and a free-standing central infotainment display that is larger than ever, measuring 13 inches diagonally. Also debuting in both models, Škoda Smart Dials are innovative rotary push-buttons that cleverly integrate haptic and digital components for a more intuitive experience.

Škoda Smart Dials: Push-buttons with digital displays

With the introduction of Škoda Smart Dials, the Czech carmaker is taking the proven combination of haptic and digital controls in its vehicles to the next level. This entirely new approach consists of three rotary push-buttons below the infotainment screen, each with a 32-millimetre digital display. These allow quick access to numerous vehicle functions based on the equipment level.

The two outer Smart Dials for the driver and front passenger control the interior temperature, seat heating, and seat ventilation, displaying the currently active function. The centre Smart Dial controls up to four different functions, such as the infotainment volume, fan speed, air direction, smart air conditioning, driving modes, and map zoom. The central Smart Dial is configured via the infotainment system menu, and holding the button down switches between functions.

Expanded range of Simply Clever features

The quest for enhanced comfort onboard is evident in the new additions, including the Phone Box with fast inductive smartphone charging capabilities of up to 15 W – and in the Kodiaq, this extends to two phones – paired with an active cooling function. Additionally, passengers benefit from up to four USB-C ports with a power output of 45 W, as well as a convenient 15 W USB-C port on the rear-view mirror.

Not to be overlooked, the new Kodiaq is available with ergo seats complete with a pneumatic massage function. Rear-seat passengers will also appreciate a fresh storage compartment in the centre tunnel. In the Superb, a redesigned steering wheel, instrument cluster and decorative trim elements blend seamlessly with enhanced optional massage seats. These now include ten pneumatically controlled massage cushions and an extensive selection of programs, with four-way adjustable lumbar support.

Matching the Kodiaq, all heating functions for the seats, steering wheel, windscreen, and rear window can be conveniently managed via a configurable Heaters button in the climate control menu.

Sustainable materials for all textiles and two popular Simply Clever features

Škoda demonstrates its commitment to sustainability by using environmentally responsible materials for all interior textiles, as well as for two iconic Simply Clever features: the umbrella in the driver’s door and the ice scraper. Continuing the approach of other Škoda models, the traditional equipment lines have been replaced by the Design Selections concept:

In the Kodiaq, customers can opt for Loft, Lounge, or ecoSuite in Black or Cognac, with textiles crafted from 100% recycled polyester. The leather in the ecoSuite Design Selection benefits from an eco-friendly tanning process using coffee bean processing residues.

For the fourth-generation Superb, the Essence trim level includes the Design Selection Studio, with choices for the Selection trim level encompassing Loft and Lounge, as well as the Design Selection Suite in Black and Cognac. The top L&K model extends the offer with the Design Selection L&K Suite in Black and Cognac, boasting leather sustainably tanned using wastewater from olive processing.

4th-gen Skoda Superb to Arrive Late This Year, 90 Years After First Model https://indianautosblog.com/4th-gen-skoda-superb-to-arrive-late-this-year-90-years-after-first-model-p325903 Fri, 05 May 2023 14:02:29 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=325903 The new fourth-generation Skoda Superb will be introduced this autumn, 90 years after the launch of the historic first model of the Superb range, produced between 1934 and 1949.

Over 50 years later, the first generation of the modern Skoda Superb was released, marking the Skoda brand’s re-entry to the upper-mid-class. The next chapter of the success story began in 2008 with the introduction of the second-generation Skoda Superb.

90 Years Of Skoda Superb

For the first time, the series was available in two body versions offering state-of-the-art assistance systems. On the market since 2015, the third generation is the first Superb series to be built on the Group’s modular MQB platform. The range was expanded in 2019 to include a plug-in hybrid variant – the Superb iV.

Historic Skoda Superb, 1934-1949

By the time the historic Superb went into production in 1934, Skoda had already produced several top-of-the-range models. However, the Superb was innovative in many ways; the onboard wiring worked with a then-new 12 V system, which is still used in cars today. Along with its contemporaries, the Superb was based on an innovatively designed chassis. The traditional longitudinal frame with a channel section was replaced by an advanced backbone frame with a central tube, dividing into two beams at the front. This design not only allowed the driveshaft to be housed in the frame’s tube but also created more room for the independent suspension, which ensured superior ride comfort.

The Superb was also the brand’s first model to feature single-circuit hydraulic brakes with equal action on all four wheels. During production, engines with the recently developed OHV valve train began to be installed in Superb cars in 1938. And unlike some of its predecessors, such as the luxury Hispano-Suiza, the Superb was developed entirely in-house at Skoda.

The bodywork, which underwent considerable modernisation in 1939, was built of a timber-framed wooden body with outer metal sheet panels, allowing the Superb to be manufactured in a variety of body styles; five civilian and three military versions were rolled out during its 13-year production period.

It was available with SV or OHV engines with outputs ranging from 40.5 to 70.7 kW and displacements from 2,492 to 3,991 cc. Most of the engines had six cylinders, the exception being the Superb 4000, which featured a V8-cylinder engine under the bonnet. This meant the Superb 4000 had the most power and the largest displacement in the series.

One of the few surviving Superb 4000s is now among the most valuable exhibits of the Skoda Museum in Mladá Boleslav. Around 900 civilian and 1,600 military vehicles of all Superb variants were produced between 1934 and 1949.

Return of the flagship, 2001-2008

2001 was a year of many highlights for the Skoda brand, including its ten-year anniversary under the wing of the Volkswagen Group. The Skoda Fabia was launched as a saloon, with Skoda also introducing its signature Simply Clever concept of practical innovations. The main event of the year, however, was the presentation of the Superb hatchback after a 50-year hiatus. This raised the Skoda brand’s profile, positioning it among the manufacturers of upper-mid-class cars.

Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in September 2001, the first-generation Superb was built on the PL 45 chassis platform. This was widened by 100 mm for the Skoda Superb, giving it an exceptionally spacious interior. The series also boasted a comprehensive range of engines; the first modern generation of the Superb offered both petrol and diesel powertrains, ranging from a 1.8-litre four-cylinder turbo with 110 kW (150 hp) to the top version – a 2.8-litre V6 with 142 kW (193 hp).

It brought with it several firsts for the Skoda brand, including bi-xenon headlamps, Tiptronic automatic transmission, the Coming Home lighting system and electronically controlled brake assist, which enhanced the braking action. The multi-link front suspension and longitudinally mounted engines were also unique among Skoda cars. In 2006, the first-generation Superb underwent a facelift, which integrated the trademark C-shaped rear-light concept.

Third Superb generation including plug-in hybrid drive, from 2015

In February 2015, the third-generation Superb was presented in Prague in a hatchback body version, followed a few months later by the estate variant. Using the Volkswagen Group’s modular MQB platform, the third-generation Skoda Superb could now incorporate all the latest technologies available.

For the first time, the model benefitted from a DCC Adaptive Chassis, tri-zone climate control and assistance systems such as Traffic Jam Assist and Emergency Assist. Adaptive Cruise Control ACC, Lane Assist and Travel Assist were also available for the Superb range. The number of Simply Clever features also rose considerably; this was the first time Škoda had offered, for example, a virtual boot release pedal, a 230 V socket for rear seat passengers and umbrellas in the panels of both front doors.

After the 2019 facelift, the third-generation Superb received additional state-of-the-art equipment, such as Matrix-LED headlights, Predictive Adaptive Cruise Control and KESSY keyless opening for all doors. Most importantly the series was expanded to include a new variant – the plug-in hybrid Superb iV with 1.4 TSI PHEV engine. To date, Skoda Auto has produced over 1,550,000 Superb cars of all types and generations since 2001, of which over 780,000 are third-generation Superbs.

Skoda Announces 2.5% Price Hike For All Models from January 2021 https://indianautosblog.com/skoda-price-hike-fom-january-2021-p322173 Wed, 30 Dec 2020 03:30:27 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=322173 As the year is drawing to a close, several manufacturers have announced a hike in the price of their vehicles. Previously, Maruti Suzuki had announced that they would be hiking the price of their vehicles from January 2021. Later, RenaultHyundai and Kia, Volkswagen and even Mahindra announced a price hike on their vehicles effective from January 2021. Now, Skoda too have announced that they will be increasing prices across their model line-up by up to 2.5%. The price revision will be effective on the vehicles from January, 2021.

Skoda's lineup in India currently includes the Rapid sedan, the Octavia RS 254, the Karoq SUV and the Superb sedan. Of these, only the Rapid is locally built here in India. All three other cars either come to India as CKDs or as full imports. Unlike Volkswagen, who only hiked the prices of the locally-made Polo and Vento, Skoda's price hike will be applicable on all four vehicles that the company sells here in India. Earlier in November, VW Group's luxury brand Audi also announced a price hike across its range.

Skoda Auto India spokesperson said,

"There has been a surge in the cost of our inputs for production due to significant volatility in the global commodity prices and foreign exchange rates in recent times. SKODA AUTO India has been absorbing these incremental costs, all this while, but is now considering a price increase of up to 2.5 per cent with effect from 1st January 2021 across its model range."

Skoda Price Hike
Skoda have announced that they will be increasing prices across their model line-up by up to 2.5%.

Price revisions towards the end of the year have almost become a norm in the automotive industry. Almost every manufacturer marginally increases the price of their vehicles at this time of the year. This price hike comes about due to increasing input costs across the spectrum, including input costs for steel, aluminum, plastics and other affiliated cost increases during the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, prices anyway saw a strong uptick due to the transition to the BS6 norms. The lockdown and the pandemic also caused supply-chain disruptions for components and raw materials, which further contributed the uptick in prices of vehicles.

Going ahead into 2021, both Volkswagen and Skoda will be going into a product offensive strategy. The first model to come out of VW Group's India 2.0 Project will be the production-spec Skoda Vision IN which will then be followed by the Volkswagen Taigun. These two are very important products for both the brands in India. The later half of 2021 will also see the next-gen Vento from Volkswagen and the next-gen Rapid from Skoda in India.

Skoda has updated its flagship sedan for the Indian market, the Superb, with significant updates to the overall visual appeal and powertrains. The new Skoda Superb comes with minor but significant design tweaks and feature additions as well as revised powertrain options.

While the silhouette of the updated Skoda Superb is totally the same as that of the model it has replaced, there are some minute changes at front and rear, which have freshened up the appeal of the sedan. The front fascia of the new Skoda Superb now features the welcoming addition of Matrix LED headlamps (not expected to be offered in India). The front grille has grown larger in size, and at the same time, the bumper has been restyled with daytime running lamps.

At the rear, the tail lamps of the new Skoda Superb are full-LED units, which also feature dynamic turn indicators – a first for a Skoda vehicle. Like other recent Skoda cars, the new Superb comes with ‘SKODA’ in block lettering in the middle of the tailgate. On the inside too, Skoda has introduced a new, enlarged Phone Box.

While the list of comfort and convenience features of the new Skoda Superb remains more or less unchanged as compared to the previous model, Skoda has made some significant additions in the list of safety features. It now includes predictive cruise control, emergency lane keep assist, front assist with predictive pedestrian protection. What will be included in the equipment list for our market is yet to be known.

The new Skoda Superb will be sold with only the 2.0-litre TSI four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 190 PS and 320 Nm of torque. While a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox is a given, there's no word on a 6-speed manual unit for a lower entry-price.

Apart from this, the larger radiator grille features double slats and protrudes a little further down into the restyled bumper. Thanks to the new bumper, there is an increase of 8 mm in the overall length to 4,869 mm.

At the rear, it features redesigned full LED tail lights with dynamic rear indicators. It will also sport a full-width chrome strip at the rear-end which will sit between the tweaked tail lamps. The clean-looking boot-lid will feature wide-spaced S-K-O-D-A lettering.

Inside, the facelifted Skoda Superb offers new decorative trims for the centre console and dashboard and new coloured contrasting stitching on the leather and Alcantara seats as well as on the armrests in the doors. Also new on the list are the seat covers for Ambition and Style trims.

The safety feature list has been updated with Predictive Cruise Control, Emergency Assist for multi-lane roads, and Front Assist with Predictive Pedestrian Protection.
