Apart from announcing the ‘Buy Now, Pay in 2022’ scheme, Renault India has also launched a new variant of the Renault Kiger as a part of its 10th-anniversary celebration. The new Renault Kiger RXT (O) variant will get some of the popular features from the car’s RXZ trims such as LED headlamps, diamond-cut alloy wheels, PM2.5 advanced atmospheric filter, 20.32 cm touchscreen infotainment system, wireless smartphone connectivity. The model will be available in a radiant red dual-tone colour option.

Under the hood of the new Renault Kiger RXT (O) variant will be a familiar 1.0L, 3-cylinder NA engine that is capable of producing 72 PS of max power at 6250 rpm and 96 Nm of peak torque at 3500 rpm. As for the transmission, both manual and AMT units will be made available. While Renault India is yet to announce the price of the new RXT (O) variant, its bookings have been opened from today, 6 August 2021.

Mahindra XUV300

The Mahindra XUV300 operates in the hotly contested sub-compact SUV segment in India and has returned respectable sales figures for the company. The top-spec variant of the car comes with segment-first features including seven airbags, dual-zone climate control with memory function, front parking sensors, heated mirrors, and disc brakes for all four wheels. Other noteworthy features include a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a sunroof, cruise control, push-button start, leather seats, hill hold function and a seven-inch infotainment system with smartphone mirroring tech and navigation.

Mechanically, the car is powered by two engine options that come in the form of a 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 1.5-litre diesel engine. The petrol unit delivers 109bhp and 200Nm of torque. Tata Nexon

In its latest update, the Tata Nexon got minor cosmetic changes that have majorly affected its persona. As with the electric version of the SUV, this one gets a revised hood for jacked-up muscularity, a tweaked grille, sharper headlamps with tri-arrow pattern DRLs and a new lower grille as well. The car sits on a set of new alloy wheels which adds more character, while its revised LED tail lamps give it a distinct look. In terms of safety, the Nexon boasts of a five-star NCAP safety rating ensuring owners and prospective buyers of a very safe car. This is backed up by a safety suite of dual-airbags, hill-hold assist, roll-over mitigation, ABS with EBD, traction control and more.

In its top-rung variant, the Tata Nexon gets features like engine push-start button, touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, cruise control, etc. Remarkably, it now gets added features like a digital instrument cluster, TPMS and a much-in-demand sunroof. Also, a notable addition in the new Nexon is the carmaker has come up with a new ‘Xpress Cool’ button owing to the hot and humid climatic conditions in India. In terms of powertrain, the Nexon gets a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that outputs 118bhp and 170Nm of torque. Transmission options for the engine include a 6-speed manual and an AMT. Alongside the petrol powertrains, also available is an oil burner that outputs 108bhp and 260Nm of torque. Transmission option on offer includes a manual and an AMT unit.

Renault Triber

The Renault Triber scored a four-star safety rating in the adult occupant protection and a 3-star rating in child occupancy protection at Global NCAP, making it the safest 7-seater tested to date in the mass segment in India. In its base-spec trim, the Triber comes equipped with two airbags, a seatbelt reminder system, speed alert warning, rear parking sensors and ABS with EBD. However, if you opt for top-spec trim of the Triber, you also get speed sensing door lock and impact sensing door unlock features along with two additional side airbags, taking the total count up to class leading 4 airbags in its top-spec trim.

14Earlier this year, the French carmaker has updated the Triber sub-compact MPV with a few subtle upgrades for the 2021 model year. These upgrades include the addition of new dual-tone colors on the top-spec RXZ trim and some new features on the inside as well. Powering the 7-seater MPV is the BR10 1.0-litre Dual VVT petrol engine. The naturally aspirated three-cylinder mill produces maximum power of 72hp at 6,250 rpm and peak torque of 96 Nm at 3,500 rpm. For transmission duties, there is either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT gearbox.

Tata Altroz

The Tata Altroz was introduced as the brand’s first-ever premium hatchback that goes against players like the Hyundai i20 and the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. In terms of features, the top-of-the-line XZ trim gets keyless entry and start, electric ORVMs, and cruise control. Also on offer are flat-bottom, tilt-adjustable steering with controls for audio and voice commands. The driver’s seat is height adjustable. There’s a single zone digital climate control system with rear AC vents along with a Harman touchscreen multimedia system complete with Andriod Auto and Apple Carplay.

In terms of powertrain, the car gets two petrol as well as one diesel engine option. The petrol engine comes in the form of a 1.2-litre unit that outputs 85 bhp and 113 Nm of torque. There's also a 1.2L turbo-petrol engine that puts out 110hp and 140Nm of torque. The diesel, on the other hand, is a 1.5-litre engine that delivers 89 bhp and 200 Nm of torque. Tata is offering a sole manual transmission option throughout the range. Also, Altroz could soon get a DCT gearbox, brand's first dual clutch gearbox.

Tata Tiago

In its most recent update, the Tata Tiago got quite a few comprehensive updates over its predecessor. On the outside, the hatchback gets new front bumper, headlamps and a new grille. In addition to this, the car also gets dual-tone alloy wheels, a black roof and black ORVMs with turn indicators.

On the inside, the new Tiago gets a mild update over its predecessor for freshness. The most major update of which is a fully digital instrument cluster as well as a new touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto alongside other connectivity options like USB and AUX-IN. In terms of powertrain, the Tiago gets a BS-VI compliant 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine that delivers 84bhp and 113Nm of torque. The engine can be had in both five-speed manual and five-speed AMT options.

Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza

On its way to the only-petrol iteration, Maruti Suzuki kept the exterior updates to a bare minimum. The Brezza’s nose now has a generous dose of chrome on its grille, which is complemented by a pair of projector headlamps and LED DRLs. The Vitara Brezza is a slightly bigger car than the Kiger at 3,995mm long, 1,790mm wide 1,640 mm in height and a wheelbase of 2,500mm. Dominating the dash is the large 7-inch touchscreen ‘Smartplay studio’ system, below which there is an uncluttered layout of sleek air-con controls and the USB, AUX and charging ports. Also, plastic quality remains the same, which is acceptable for this segment (Hyundai Venue sets the segment standard).

In terms of safety, the car comes with features like dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors. While the pre-facelift Vitara Brezza was offered with a diesel engine, the facelifted SUV comes with a 1.5-litre petrol unit. This engine puts out 105PS of power and 138Nm of torque. It comes mated to either a 5-speed manual transmission option or a 4-speed AT gearbox. The Vitara Brezza is offered with a 2WD system. Prices for the Maruti Vitara Brezza starts at INR 7.39 lakh (ex-showroom) for the LXI variant.

Renault Triber - Global NCAP Test Scores

The Renault Triber secured a score of 11.62 points out of a possible 17 points, thus bagging the four-star rating in the adult occupant protection category. Speaking more specifically about the protection offered to driver and passenger, protection for head and neck was rated as good for both driver and passenger, while protection to tibia was rated adequate for both. Meanwhile, chest protection was rated as marginal and adequate for the driver and passenger respectively, while knee protection were rated marginal and good, respectively.

In terms of child occupancy protection, the Triber scored 27 points out of possible 49 points, thus securing a not-so-good three-star safety rating. For this category, the tests were performed with both a forward facing child seat and a rear facing child seat. In case of the forward facing child seat for a three-year old dummy, the seat had to be secured using the three-point seatbelt, which was not able to reduce excessive forward movement during the impact. Thus, protection to the chest was only rated as average while head protection was low as it was exposed in the crash.

In case of the rear facing child seat used for the 18-month-old test dummy, it too was secured using the adult seatbelts, but in conjunction with the child seat, it was able to offer full protection to the child occupant. It's is worth noting that the Triber does not get ISOFIX anchorages for installing child seats at the rear. As for its structural rigidity, the bodyshell of the MPV was rated as unstable as it was not not deemed capable of withstanding any further loads. However, the footwell area was still rated stable.

Renault Triber - Safety Features

As is the norm with Global NCAP tests, the Renault Triber used for the crash test was a base-spec model and only came equipped with the most basic safety features. That means the model tested was only equipped with two airbags, a seatbelt reminder system, speed alert warning, rear parking sensors and ABS with EBD. However, if you opt for top-spec trim of the Triber, you also get speed sensing door lock and impact sensing door unlock features along with two additional side airbags, taking the total count up to class leading 4 airbags in its top-spec trim.

This rendering of the Renault Triber facelift has been imagined by digital rendering artist Shoeb R. Kalania, and uploaded on his Youtube channel. The facelifted model in this rendering looks a lot more in-line with the design of some of Renault's global models. The grille is much larger and bolder, and features new detailing along with a chrome garnish at the bottom. The headlamp design has been completely revised, now featuring a bulkier design instead of the angular design of the current model. Not only is it larger than before, but it also features full-LED lighting with new LED DRLs that look quite striking.

Lower down, the front bumper has also received a comprehensive makeover. The fog lamps are completely new and also feature a new chrome garnish. They are deep set in the front bumper, giving the bumper a more chiseled and muscular look. The central air dam on the bumper is larger as well and it gets a revised skid plate and new mesh detailing. As no facelift is complete without a new set of wheels, the Renault Triber facelift in this rendering has been specced with new 15-inch dual-tone alloy wheels. As stock, the Triber only gets 15-inch steel wheels with silver wheel caps. There are no other design changes that have been made to the MPV.

Earlier in March this year, Renault updated the Triber with new dual-tone colors for the top-spec RXZ trim along with the addition of new features across the range. The carmaker introduced a new Cedar Brown color that replaced the now-discontinued Red color shade on the Triber. All the color options - blue, brown, yellow, silver, and white - are now offered with a new black contrasting roof on the top-spec dual-tone RXZ trim. It was also updated with LED turn indicators on the ORVMs (offered from RXT onwards), a dual-horn setup (offered on all trims), steering-mounted controls (offered from RXT onwards) and a height-adjustable driver’s seat (limited to RXZ).

Under the hood, the Renault Triber is powered by a BR10 1.0-litre Dual VVT petrol engine. The naturally aspirated three-cylinder mill produces maximum power of 72hp and 96 Nm of peak torque. For transmission duties, there is either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT gearbox. The 100hp, 1.0L turbo-petrol engine is long due on the Triber, but it will likely be introduced only in 2022. Prices for the Renault Triber currently range between INR 5.30 - 7.82 lakh (ex-showroom). At this price point, the Triber rivals the likes the Maruti Suzuki Swift, Ford Figo, and Maruti WagonR, but offers practicality like none other.

In terms of features, the car gets keyless entry and start, a touchscreen multimedia system, a driver information system, dual glove-boxes for additional storage, electric ORVMs without fold function, a cooled box in the centre, and a single-zone manual AC with rear vents that can be adjusted via a dial. The car is powered by a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine that puts out 70bhp and a little under 100Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a manual transmission as well as an AMT.

Datsun Go+

The Datsun Go+ stands as the most affordable 7-seater in India. The car, which is essentially a stretched GO with an additional row of seats, is right suited for a family of seven or less. Its last facelift was back in 2018 when the car benefited from a few tweaks inside and out. However, the icing on the cake came recently in the form of an option for an automatic transmission. Visually, the car resembles its five-seater sibling on the outside, inside as well as the sumptuous list of features for its price.

This list includes elements like a 7.0-inch touchscreen system which offers all the functionality expected of a car in this segment like Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity and light and dark mode, deep door pockets, covered glove box, a rear parcel shelf. At its heart, the Datsun Go+ is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine that produces 75bhp and 104Nm of torque. The car gets two transmission options including a 5-speed manual and a CVT.

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga

The Maurit Ertiga stands as the mainstay of the 5-seater space with maximum sales in the segment, while not being as affordable as the Datson Go+, or the Triber. The car's latest update is a major step up over its previous iteration. The deal has also become sweeter with features like the touchscreen infotainment system, rear AC, automatic climate control, ABS with EBS, dual airbags, and ISOFIX rear seats among others.

After the BS-VI update, the car now comes with just one engine options i.e. the 1.5-litre unit that delivers 103 bhp and 138 Nm of torque. Transmission options for the car come in the form of a manual as well as a torque converter. If you are one who likes a more premium car, the Ertiga can be bought as the XL6, which Maruti sells from the Nexa dealerships, having a set of features and engine, but a different seating system and updated design.

Toyota Innova Crysta

The Innova Crysta, is without any doubt, the poster boy of MPVs in India. It hasn't received any major update in the past couple of years, yet has a timeless design. In terms of dimensions, the Toyota Innova Crysta measures 4735mm in length and 1830mm in width. The car stands 1795mm high and has a wheelbase of 2750mm. The car gets a boot space of 300-litres with all three rows up, and 900-litres with the third row folded. The Innova Crysta gets a nine-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

In term of powertrain, Toyota offers the Innova Crysta with a 2.7-litre petrol engine that outputs 166PS and 245Nm of torque and 2.4-litre diesel that delivers 150PS and 360Nm of torque. Both are mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and offer a 6-speed torque converter unit as an option. The Toyota Innova Crysta comes in 18 variants. The price for the entry-level GX 7-seater variant starts at INR 16.27 lakh*, meanwhile, the top-rung ZX 7-seater variant with automatic transmission goes up to INR 24.34 lakh*.

Mahindra Marazzo

Mahindra Marazzo is the brand's first modern MPV since Bolero has been in the market for a long time now and is primary considered a rural SUV. The Marazzo, with the design inspired by Shark, recently got a bump in the prices up to Rs 39,000. Post the same the car is now priced from INR 11.64 lakh* to INR 13.79 lakh*. It is being offered in three variants: M2, M4+ and M6+ and comes in both 7- and 8-seater configurations. The Marazzo sits between the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and Toyota Innova Crysta in terms of pricing.

It is powered by a 1.5-litre diesel engine rated at 122PS and 300Nm. It comes mated to a 6-speed manual. Mahindra also offers an Eco mode that reduces the engine output to a more modest 100PS. Mahindra’s MPV comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, remote keyless entry, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and auto climate control. In terms of safety features, the car comes with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD and ISOFIX child seat anchors.

Renault Kwid

Renault's latest update for the Kwid was a laudable one. The entry-level hatchback, in many ways, helped Renault established the brand's foothold in the country. The new Renault Kwid comes with an updated design and sports a new imposing front fascia among other tweaks. The car has shown a substantial leap in terms of features as well. The update has brought in plenty of addition in the cabin as well. It gets a new steering wheel, a redesigned dash and a fully-digital instrument cluster. Also on offer is the new MEDIANAV Evolution infotainment system that comes with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth connectivity and voice commands. There’s a piano black surround for the touchscreen with subtle chrome accents, which feels quite premium for the segment.

What also works in its favour is that the Kwid gets a boot space capacity of 279 litres, which is more than the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso and the Datsun Redi-GO. At its heart is an 800-cc unit that delivers 54 hp and 72 Nm of torque and a 1.0-litre block that churns out 68 hp and 91 Nm of torque. There are options of both manual as well as AMT gearboxes to choose from. The facelift comes at a starting price of INR 3.12 lakh*.

Maruti Suzuki Alto

The Maruti Suzuki Alto requires no introduction. The car has been one of the best-selling models for the largest selling manufacturer in India. Over a decade of being on sale in India, the Alto recently crossed 40 lakh unit in India alone. The car has also made frequent appearance in the top-10 best-selling cars of the country. The Alto was first launched in 2000 and the price of the car starts at INR 2.99 lakh*.

In its current avatar, the car is available in only 800 cc model, while recently the 1.0-litre K10 model was replaced by S-Presso. The 800 cc model produces 48 hp and is paired to a 5-speed manual only. At the start of this year, the 800 cc Alto underwent a facelift; received a cosmetic makeover, the engine was upgraded to meet BS6 emission standards, and it meets upcoming crash- and pedestrian safety regulations. On the inside, the new Alto gets the Smart Play Dock with Bluetooth connectivity.

Hyundai Santro

The Santro rooted Hyundai’s brand name in India. After being absent in the market for a while, Hyundai brought back the Santro badge in a rather interesting package, replacing the i10 as the brand's entry-level hatchback. In line with its stablemates, the new Hyundai Santro comes with a few segment-first features like a 7-inch touchscreen audio-video system. The multi-media system has Android Auto, Apple Carplay and Mirror Link along with supporting Voice Recognition Function & Rear Parking Camera display on the screen. It is powered by a 1.0-litre petrol engine which produces 69 ps at 5,500 rpm. Prices for the new Santro starts at INR 4.67 lakh*. There is no doubt that it should be in the list of best cars under 6 lakh in India.

Maruti Suzuki Swift

Last on our list of best cars under 6 lakh in India is the Maruti Swift, which was recently launched with an updated version. The changes come in the form of a brand new engine and a handful of exterior and interior changes to keep it fresh in the portfolio. It now gets a K12 series Dual Jet Dual VVT engine with an idle start-stop function. Simply put, the same 1.2-litre engine will now return a higher fuel efficiency of 23.20-kmpl in manual transmission and 23.76-kmpl when paired with the AMT gearbox. The power figures have also bumped by 7 bhp to 89 bhp and 113 Nm of torque.

In terms of cosmetic changes, the 2021 Swift features a new chrome stripe on the single-piece front grille which now has a mesh-pattern. Other highlights include a dual-tone exterior shade which can be had with the top ZXi+ trim. Renault has updated the Triber with new dual-tone color options, but it is limited to only the top-spec RXZ trim. The carmaker has also introduced a new Cedar Brown color that replaces the now-discontinued Red color shade on the Triber. All the color options - blue, brown, yellow, silver, and white - will be offered with a new black contrasting roof on the top-spec dual-tone RXZ trim. The new RXZ dual-tone variant commands a premium of INR 17,000 over the monotone option.

There are, however, no mechanical changes on the Triber with this update. Powering the 7-seater MPV is the familiar BR10 1.0-litre Dual VVT petrol engine. The naturally aspirated three-cylinder mill produces maximum power of 72hp at 6,250 rpm and peak torque of 96 Nm at 3,500 rpm. For transmission duties, there is either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT gearbox. The engine has been the only sore point of the Triber as it feels a little underpowered. This issue will likely be resolved when Renault introduces the 1.0L turbo-petrol engine on the Triber, the same that's offered with the Kiger.

The 100hp, 1.0L turbo-petrol engine is long due on the Triber, but it will likely be introduced only in 2022. At this price point, the Triber rivals the likes the Maruti Suzuki Swift, Ford Figo, and Maruti WagonR, but offers practicality like none other. The Triber is India’s first modular MPV to get a removable third row of seating to liberate additional boot space. There are no other MPVs, or any vehicle, under 4 meters that offer the capacity to seat seven passengers. The Triber has been an instrumental product for Renault to penetrate into tier II and tier III cities, a demography that hugely appreciates more seating capacity at an affordable package.

Kia Carnival

Kia, one of the newest entrant in India, decided to tap the premium MPV market of India and bridge the gap between the Toyota Innova Crysta and ultra-luxury entrants like the Mercedes-Benz V-Class and Toyota Vellfire by offering the Carnival MPV, which came as the brand’s second offering in the Indian market. Mahindra Bolero

Renault is providing INR 20,000 worth of cash discounts on the 2020 model and INR 10,000 on the 2021 model. In addition to this, there is also a loyalty bonus of INR 10,000, exchange bonus of INR 20,000, Corporate discounts of INR 10,000 and rural offers worth INR 5,000. The entry-level Kwid hatchback is priced from INR 3.12 lakh* to INR 5.31 lakh*. It is offered in five variants -- the base-spec STD, RXE, RXL, RTX, and the top-spec Climber.

It comes with two petrol engines 0.8-litre and 1.0-litre. While the former is offered with only a manual gearbox, the latter gets both 5-speed MT and 5-speed AMT. The 0.8-litre motor belts out 54PS and 72Nm, whereas the 1.0-litre engine generates 68 PS and 91 Nm.

The Triber is available in four variants -- RXE, RXL, RTX, and the RXZ. It is offered with a 1.0-litre petrol engine that is good for 72 PS and 96 Nm. This engine comes mated to either a 5-speed manual or an AMT gearbox.

Renault Duster

The Renault Duster can now be bought with a cash discount of INR 20,000 on the 1.3-litre turbo variant. The company is also offering a loyalty bonus of INR 15,000, exchange bonus of INR 30,000 for the RXS and RXZ variants, corporate discounts of INR 30,000 and rural offers worth INR 15,000. While the standard Duster is available in just two variants (RXS and RXZ), the Duster Turbo can be had in three -- RXE, RXS, and RXZ.

The Duster is available only with petrol engines. The affordable one is a 1.5-litre unit that makes 106 PS/142 Nm and can be had only with a 5-speed MT. Renault also offers the SUV with a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine that generates 156 PS/254 Nm. It is mated to a 6-speed MT and (an optional) 7-step CVT.

Renault stated that the company witnessed a substantial jump of 30 per cent in rural market sales over the past six months. In August this year, Renault announced that it would be adding 17 new sales and service touchpoints to its network in India.

Renault holds high expectations for the Kiger SUV which is set to be its most affordable SUV in India. While the model will be placed at a slight premium over its sibling Magnite, it will still be among the cars that operate in the low rungs of the compact SUV segment in terms of price.

In line with the Kiger concept, the production version will share its powertrain with the Triber. This means that the car will be powered by a 1.0-litre naturally aspirated engine that outputs 71 bhp and 96 Nm of torque. The company will also debut a turbo-charged unit that will be paired with manual as well as automatic transmission units.

The Kiger will be based on Renault-Nissan’s modular CMF-A platform that currently underpins the Triber. This also means that the car will be similar to the Magnite in terms of size. In terms of features, the car is speculated to be offered with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, LED projector headlamps, cruise control, steering mounted controls and voice recognition technology among others.
