Apart from announcing the ‘Buy Now, Pay in 2022’ scheme, Renault India has also launched a new variant of the Renault Kiger as a part of its 10th-anniversary celebration. While Renault India is yet to announce the price of the new RXT (O) variant, its bookings have been opened from today, 6 August 2021.

Under the hood of the Dacia Spring EV, the ICE powertrain has been replaced by an all-electric motor and a battery pack. The electric motor is capable of producing 44hp of power and 125Nm of peak torque. It draws its power form a 27.4kWh battery pack. While the Spring EV does not boast of any class leading figures in terms of specifications, it can deliver a range of 305 km as per the WLTP cycle (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure), within city limits.

You can thus expect an average range of about 230 km. That's actually pretty decent for what is a small city runabout. The battery pack in the Spring EV is also capable of fast charging, going from 0-80% in under an hour using a 30kW DC fast charger. If you are using a 7.4kW home charger, it will take about five hours to charge the battery pack from 0 to 100%. To give you a perspective, the Tata Nexon EV takes around 8 hours to charge from 20-80% using a 15Amp charger cable.

In terms of design the Spring EV looks identical to the Renault Kwid. The only difference is the Dacia logo at the front and the rear and an unique grille that comes with it. The rear bumper also boasts of a faux silver skid plate and the alloy wheels are of a different design. The rest of the car is absolutely identical to the Kwid. There’s also a funkier variant (similar to the Kwid Climber), with orange elements on the doors, ORVMs, and the grille.

On the inside, again, the dashboard layout is mostly identical to that of the Kwid. However, it gets a new Dacia four-spoke steering wheel and a smaller 7-inch infotainment system. This being an EV, the center console has also been cleared up for more space and practicality. Previously, Renault had said that they would be launching an EV in India based on the Kwid's CMF-A platform by 2022. However, that plan is likely not materializing any time soon due to the lack of charging infrastructure.

Renault Kwid

Renault's latest update for the Kwid was a laudable one. The entry-level hatchback, in many ways, helped Renault established the brand's foothold in the country. The new Renault Kwid comes with an updated design and sports a new imposing front fascia among other tweaks. The car has shown a substantial leap in terms of features as well. The update has brought in plenty of addition in the cabin as well. It gets a new steering wheel, a redesigned dash and a fully-digital instrument cluster. Also on offer is the new MEDIANAV Evolution infotainment system that comes with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth connectivity and voice commands. There’s a piano black surround for the touchscreen with subtle chrome accents, which feels quite premium for the segment.

What also works in its favour is that the Kwid gets a boot space capacity of 279 litres, which is more than the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso and the Datsun Redi-GO. At its heart is an 800-cc unit that delivers 54 hp and 72 Nm of torque and a 1.0-litre block that churns out 68 hp and 91 Nm of torque. There are options of both manual as well as AMT gearboxes to choose from. The facelift comes at a starting price of INR 3.12 lakh*.

Maruti Suzuki Alto

The Maruti Suzuki Alto requires no introduction. The car has been one of the best-selling models for the largest selling manufacturer in India. Over a decade of being on sale in India, the Alto recently crossed 40 lakh unit in India alone. The car has also made frequent appearance in the top-10 best-selling cars of the country. The Alto was first launched in 2000 and the price of the car starts at INR 2.99 lakh*.

In its current avatar, the car is available in only 800 cc model, while recently the 1.0-litre K10 model was replaced by S-Presso. The 800 cc model produces 48 hp and is paired to a 5-speed manual only. At the start of this year, the 800 cc Alto underwent a facelift; received a cosmetic makeover, the engine was upgraded to meet BS6 emission standards, and it meets upcoming crash- and pedestrian safety regulations. On the inside, the new Alto gets the Smart Play Dock with Bluetooth connectivity.

Hyundai Santro

The Santro rooted Hyundai’s brand name in India. After being absent in the market for a while, Hyundai brought back the Santro badge in a rather interesting package, replacing the i10 as the brand's entry-level hatchback. In line with its stablemates, the new Hyundai Santro comes with a few segment-first features like a 7-inch touchscreen audio-video system. The multi-media system has Android Auto, Apple Carplay and Mirror Link along with supporting Voice Recognition Function & Rear Parking Camera display on the screen. It is powered by a 1.0-litre petrol engine which produces 69 ps at 5,500 rpm. Prices for the new Santro starts at INR 4.67 lakh*. There is no doubt that it should be in the list of best cars under 6 lakh in India.

Renault Triber

The Renault Triber is the latest addition in the seven-seater space having debuted this time last year. With prices starting at INR 5.30 lakh*, the Triber comes as a neat and rather unconventional package for someone looking to buy a car below 6 lakh. The Renault Triber gets a 5+2 cabin where the third row can be flat folded, or fully removed to create a boot space of 675-litre, making it a highly practical car. In fact, it gets two glove-boxes, and other pockets specifically designed for Indian buyers.

In terms of features, the car gets keyless entry and start, a touchscreen multimedia system, a driver information system, electric ORVMs without fold function, and a cooled box in the centre. On the safety front, the car gets ABS, EBD, and adjustable headrests for four occupants. The car is powered by a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine that puts out 70 bhp and a little under 100 Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a manual transmission as well as an AMT unit.

Maruti Suzuki Swift

Last on our list of best cars under 6 lakh in India is the Maruti Swift, which was recently launched with an updated version. The changes come in the form of a brand new engine and a handful of exterior and interior changes to keep it fresh in the portfolio. It now gets a K12 series Dual Jet Dual VVT engine with an idle start-stop function. Simply put, the same 1.2-litre engine will now return a higher fuel efficiency of 23.20-kmpl in manual transmission and 23.76-kmpl when paired with the AMT gearbox. The power figures have also bumped by 7 bhp to 89 bhp and 113 Nm of torque.

In terms of cosmetic changes, the 2021 Swift features a new chrome stripe on the single-piece front grille which now has a mesh-pattern. Other highlights include a dual-tone exterior shade which can be had with the top ZXi+ trim. The projector headlights, LED DRLs, 15-inch precision-cut alloy wheels, floating roof effect are to be carried over from the current model. On the inside, the cabin gets a twin-pod instrument cluster with a coloured 4.2-inch TFT display, cruise control, idle start-stop function, and key synchronised auto-foldable ORVMs. The 2021 Maruti Swift is current on sale with the price starting from Rs 5.73 Lakh* in India.

Renault Kwid

Renault is providing INR 20,000 worth of cash discounts on the 2020 model and INR 10,000 on the 2021 model. In addition to this, there is also a loyalty bonus of INR 10,000, exchange bonus of INR 20,000, Corporate discounts of INR 10,000 and rural offers worth INR 5,000. The entry-level Kwid hatchback is priced from INR 3.12 lakh* to INR 5.31 lakh*. It is offered in five variants -- the base-spec STD, RXE, RXL, RTX, and the top-spec Climber.

It comes with two petrol engines 0.8-litre and 1.0-litre. While the former is offered with only a manual gearbox, the latter gets both 5-speed MT and 5-speed AMT. The 0.8-litre motor belts out 54PS and 72Nm, whereas the 1.0-litre engine generates 68 PS and 91 Nm.

Renault Triber

The French manufacturer is offering the Triber MPV with a cash discount of INR 30,000 on AMT variants and up to INR 15,000 on manual variants. Also available is a loyalty bonus of INR 10,000, exchange bonus of INR 20,000, corporate discounts of INR 10,000 and rural offers worth INR 5,000. The Triber is available in four variants -- RXE, RXL, RTX, and the RXZ. It is offered with a 1.0-litre petrol engine that is good for 72 PS and 96 Nm. This engine comes mated to either a 5-speed manual or an AMT gearbox.

Renault Duster

The Renault Duster can now be bought with a cash discount of INR 20,000 on the 1.3-litre turbo variant. The company is also offering a loyalty bonus of INR 15,000, exchange bonus of INR 30,000 for the RXS and RXZ variants, corporate discounts of INR 30,000 and rural offers worth INR 15,000. While the standard Duster is available in just two variants (RXS and RXZ), the Duster Turbo can be had in three -- RXE, RXS, and RXZ.

The Duster is available only with petrol engines. The affordable one is a 1.5-litre unit that makes 106 PS/142 Nm and can be had only with a 5-speed MT. Renault also offers the SUV with a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine that generates 156 PS/254 Nm. It is mated to a 6-speed MT and (an optional) 7-step CVT.

The Triber sub-compact MPV is priced between  INR 5.12 lakh to INR 7.34 lakh in the country. Meanwhile, the Renault Duster, their flagship product in India, is priced from INR 8.59 lakh and goes up to INR 13.59 lakh. All these prices are ex-showroom, Delhi.

Renault claims that with the launch of the Triber AMT, the Kwid 1.0 RXL and Neotech edition along with the new Duster turbo-petrol in the second half of 2020 have helped the company further strengthen their position in India. Currently, Renault is gearing up for the launch of the Kiger sub-compact SUV to take on the likes of the Hyundai Venue and Kia Sonet. This again will be very important product for Renault in India, just like it was for Nissan with the Magnite.

Renault sells the Duster with two petrol engines in India - a 1.5l petrol and 1.3L turbo-petrol - and there are separate discounts for each of the engine options. Prices for the Renault Duster range from INR 8.59 lakh to INR 13.59 lakh (ex-showroom). The 1.3L Duster turbo-petrol is available with total benefits of up to INR 70,000. Prices for the Renault Triber range from INR 5.12 lakh to INR 7.34 Lakh (ex-showroom) in India and there are total benefits of up to INR 50,000 to be enjoyed on the Renault Triber in discounts. The Triber is available with cash discount of INR 20,000 for the AMT variants while the manual RXL, RXT and RXZ variants get a cash discount of INR 10,000. A Loyalty bonus of INR 10,000 can be availed with either cash discount or exchange of existing Renault vehicle. Corporate discounts and rural offers extend up to INR 9,000 and INR 5,000 respectively, but subject to customers with valid documents only. The RXE variant solely gets the loyalty bonus and no additional offers.

Renault Kwid

The Kwid is the most affordable Renault in India, with prices starting from INR 2.99 lakh, going up to INR 5.12 Lakh (ex-showroom). Total Discounts on the Kwid go up to INR 45,000. That includes a cash discount of INR 20,000 on the RXL AMT variant and of INR 15,000 on the rest of the variants. A Loyalty bonus of INR 10,000 can be availed with either cash discount or exchange of existing Renault vehicle. Corporate discounts and rural offers extend up to INR 9,000 and INR 5,000 respectively, but subject to customers with valid documents only. Offers on the STD and RXE 0.8L variant are limited to loyalty benefits only.

The Kwid that was tested is actually made-in-India and sold in South Africa. It is however largely similar to the India-spec model. As is the norm, Global NCAP crash tested the Kwid at a speed of 64kph. It scored a 2-star safety rating in both Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and Child Occupant Protection (COP). The body shell was however rated unstable on impact and it was not capable of withstanding further loads. The report however did note that Renault has improved the body structure when compared to its predecessor.

In Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), the Kwid scored 7.78 points out of 17 available. For reference, its pretty close to 8.02 points that the India-spec Kia Seltos managed a few days ago. The Kwid offered good head protection for the passenger but the driver's head protection was rated as adequate. Chest protection was rated as poor for the driver and adequate for the passenger. Knee protection for both the driver and passenger was rated as marginal as it could be hurt by structures behind the dashboard.

In Child Occupant Protection (COP), the Kwid managed a score of 19.68 points out of 49. Excessive movement for the 3-year old child dummy seated on the front-facing child seats could not be prevented. The child's head and chest were also only marginally protected due to structural failure. Even the 18-month-old child dummy seated on rearward-facing child seat had limited protection for head as it came in contact with the structure. The Kwid also lacked three-point seat belts for the middle passenger and ISOFIX  child seat mounts, thus leading to some further points deduction.

It must however be noted that the South-African spec model gets dual-airbags as standard while the India-spec model only gets a driver side airbag. In India, it's only the top-spec Climber (O) variant that gets dual airbags. Dual-airbags contribute hugely to Global NCAP ratings and that's a big miss on the India-spec model. The Brazilian-spec Renault Kwid gets 3-star safety rating because it additionally gets side airbags as well. It's still good to see that the Renault Kwid has slightly improved over its predecessor. More importantly, its better than the 0-star safety rating of the S-Presso. A few more standard safety features, and the India-spec Renault Kwid safety rating will surely fare better.

In its most recent update, the Tata Tiago gets few updates over its predecessor including a re-designed exterior, a fully-digital instrument cluster; along with a new touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

When it comes to the powertrain, the Tata Tiago gets a BS-VI compliant 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine that delivers 84 bhp and 113 Nm of torque. The engine can be mated to either a five-speed manual or five-speed AMT. The price for the Tata Tiago starts at INR 4.85 lakh*.

Being the next car in the list of the best value for money car under 7 lakh in India, The Grand i10 has been a popular badge in the hatchback segment, competing against the likes of the Maruti Swift. However, for someone looking to buy a feature-packed good looking car other than a Maruti-Suzuki, the Grand i10 Nios is a perfect option. The car gets a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that has an output of 100 hp and 172 Nm of torque, paired to a 5-speed manual transmission. Also on offer is a NA 1.2-litre Kappa engine that puts out 82 bhp and 114 Nm of torque; along with a 1.2-litre diesel engine that delivers 74 hp and 190 Nm of torque.

Last on our list of the best value for money cars under 7 lakh in India is the popular Maruti Baleno, Suzuki Baleno is is not only the best-selling car in India but also one of the best-selling hatchbacks in the Indonesian car market (source: Cintamobil.com). Despite facing initial competition from the Hyundai Elite i20, the Baleno managed to stay ahead of the game thanks to a no-nonsense package that not only looks good, but has massive cabin space and modern features. There’s only a 1.2-litre petrol unit on offer that generates 84 bhp and 114 Nm of torque. The engine gets a five-speed manual as standard, while the higher variants offer a CVT option.

Inside, the Baleno gets a dark-themed cabin to add a sporty touch and a unique layout for dashboard. The standout features include a SmartPlay Studio infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic climate control and projector headlamps ith LED DRLs. Standard safety features include dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX child seat mounts and rear parking sensors are standard. Starting with its looks, the Dacia Spring Electric looks pretty much identical to the new Renault Kwid Climber. Instead of a bold Renault badge up front, European buyers will find a Dacia badge instead. The closed-off grille also doubles as the protective cover for the battery charging socket. Another change that European buyers will get over the Renaut Kwid are the star-shaped dual-tone alloy wheels. Step inside and the all-new Spring Electric gets a contemporary looking cabin that is not far off from the design of that of the Renault Kwid. You get a chunkier-looking steering wheel, with a familiar all-digital instrument console and 3.5-inch display in the front. Besides that, you get a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto/Apple CarPlay and a rotary dial-style gear knob. To reinstate the all-electric nature, the Datsun Spring Electric also features blue accents around the AC vents, centre console and on the seats.

When it comes to the powertrain, the all-electric Dacia Spring gets a 33kW electric motor that draws power from a 26.8kWh battery pack. With a full charge, the Spring Electric can return a range of 225km, according to the WLTP running cycle. Charging the Dacia Spring Electric up to 80 per cent charge using a 30kW DC charging station takes less than one hour, while charging up to 100 per cent from a standard wall socket takes under 14 hours. You also get 7.4Kw AND 3.7kW charging wall sockets which can charge the batteries to 100 percent in 5 and 8.5 hours, respectively.

The Neotech limited-edition variants will feature first-in-segment dual-tone exterior in two colour combinations - Zanskar Blue body with Silver roof and Silver body with Zanskar Blue roof. Other changes to the exterior include chrome add-on grille and B-pillar black tapping, 3D decals on the C-pillar and NEOTECH door claddings. The rest of the design remains the same as the standard Kwid.

The 2020 Neotech edition gets many changes inside the cabin to entice the buyers. It comes with an 8-inch UFC infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, seat fabric modification with blue inserts & blue stitches and chrome AMT dial.

Speaking about the features, the Renault Kwid Neotech edition will continue to get many segment-best features as offered in the standard model. These include LED digital instrument cluster, rear camera a floor console-mounted AMT dial, one-touch lane change indicator, speed-dependent volume control and a boot capacity of 279-litres. The standard Kwid gets a 20.32 cm Touchscreen MediaNAV Evolution.

Maruti Suzuki Alto

The Maruti Suzuki Alto requires no introduction. The car has been one of the best-selling models for the largest selling manufacturer in India. Over two decades of being on sale in India, the Alto crossed 40 lakh unit in India alone. The car has also made frequent appearance in the top-10 best-selling cars of the country. The Maruti Suzuki Alto has been the preferred choice of Indian car buyers with 76 per cent of Alto customers choosing it as their first car. The Alto was first launched in 2000 and has been on sales for the past 20 years.

In its current avatar, the car was available with a 1.0-litre K10 variant as well as the 800 cc model. It’s top-rung VXI plus trim gets manual air conditioning, front only power windows, a touchscreen multimedia system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and useable cup and bottle holders upfront. It also gets steering mounted controls for audio and Bluetooth telephony. However, it missed out on lock-unlock button, a rear wash-wipe, and an interior rearview mirror with a day-night flick switch.

The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso is powered by the same K10 engine that powered the Alto K10 and serves as the replacement for the car. The engine comes with BS-VI compliance and produces 64 bhp and 90 Nm of torque through a 5-speed manual transmission. Prices for the car starts at INR 3.71 lakh*.

Hyundai Santro

The Santro rooted Hyundai’s brand name in India. And after being absent in the market for a while, Hyundai brought back the Santro badge in a rather interesting package. Hyundai discontinued Santro after 16 years of service, and revived the nameplate again after 4 years, however, it's mostly the all-new i10 that got the Santro name. In line with its stablemates, the new Hyundai Santro comes with a few segment-first features like a 7-inch touchscreen audio-video system. The multi-media system has Android Auto, Apple Carplay and Mirror Link along with supporting Voice Recognition Function & Rear Parking Camera display on the screen.

The new Hyundai Santro is powered by a 1.0-litre petrol engine which produces 69 ps at 5,500 pm and there's both AMT and manual gearboxes on offer. Prices for the new Santro starts at INR 4.57 lakh*.
