In other news, Maruti Suzuki’s Chairman RC Bhargava has recently expressed scepticism over switching to electric vehicles. Speaking at the 61st annual convention of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), he said that the country’s largest carmaker will not be entering the EV space in the short term. Bhargava’s concern is that entry-level car buyers don’t have the financial heft required to purchase cars that comply with European standards. Also, electric vehicles are not targeted at people who fall in the low-income brackets and, thus, should not be the first in line to be incentivised.

Maruti Suzuki hints it may never launch diesel vehicles again - IAB Report https://indianautosblog.com/maruti-suzuki-never-launch-bs6-diesel-vehicles-p320718 Thu, 21 May 2020 05:23:23 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=320718 Towards the end of BS4 era, Maruti Suzuki discontinued all its diesel vehicles. While the company is looking at upgrading one of its diesel engines to BS6, the probability of that happening is low, as per a recent development.

2020 Suzuki Ertiga Front Three Quarters Thailand
A Maruti Ertiga diesel BS6 or a Maruti Ciaz diesel BS6 may never become a reality.

During a conference call with analysts this month, Ajay Seth, Sr. Executive Director & CFO, Maruti Suzuki, indicated that Maruti Suzuki may never launch diesel vehicles again, owing to dropping demand and the high cost of upgrading diesel engines to make them compliant with the BS-VI emission norms.

“The contribution of sales from petrol vehicles stands at 93% in quarter 4 2019/’20,” Seth said. The final quarter of FY2020 was when Maruti Suzuki was dispatching its last remaining diesel vehicle stock. The company has stopped manufacturing diesel vehicles as none of their engines could be upgraded to BS-VI because of the high costs involved.

The shift towards petrol vehicles is more evident now, with share of diesel vehicles for the industry falling from 20% in quarter 4 2019/'20 -- falling below 20% in quarter 4 in 2019/’20.

Until now, it was expected that Maruti Suzuki may at least bring back diesel engine option in vehicles longer than 4,000 mm i.e. models like the Ertiga and the rumoured new flagship SUV. However, that also seems unlikely now. Shashank Srivastava, Head of Marketing & Sales, Maruti Suzuki, has admitted that the demand for diesel engines in the case of 4,000 mm+, premium B-SUVs and C-SUVs is still there. At the same time, he has also indicated that petrol engines are becoming more popular even among those bigger SUVs. Below is what he has said about this matter:

It's only in the SUV category that there is -- and that too in the mid-SUV and upper category of SUV that there is a significant percentage of diesel. But the initial demand for the new launches of the competition for -- in the SUV category also indicates -- whether it's Seltos or whether it is Hector or even Creta, it does indicate that there is a lot of traction for gasoline even in those segments.

Concluding his statement of analysis about the demand for diesel engines in passenger vehicles, Srivastava said that the company expects “that the diesel percentage in the industry will further come down.”

2020 Suzuki Ertiga Rear Three Quarters Thailand
Maruti Suzuki is likely to focus more on electrification than on diesel engines moving forward.

Reports are rife that Maruti Suzuki is testing a BS-VI version of the E15A 1.5-litre diesel engine in the Ertiga. Even if that is true, the decision to commercialise that BS-VI diesel engine could change at any given point depending on the market demand. The company used to offer the BS4 version of the E15A 1.5-litre diesel engine in the Ertiga and Ciaz. Our safe bet is on mild-hybrid and full-hybrid systems serving as a replacement for diesel engines in the company’s bigger models in the future.

Maruti Swift and Maruti Ertiga get Smartplay Studio infotainment system - IAB Report https://indianautosblog.com/maruti-swift-maruti-ertiga-get-smartplay-studio-infotainment-system-p320347 Fri, 17 Apr 2020 13:54:35 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=320347 The Maruti Swift and Maruti Ertiga have received the Smartplay Studio touchscreen infotainment system. Previously, these models had the SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment system.

Smartplay Studio, like SmartPlay, is a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Maruti Suzuki had introduced it first in the latest Wagon R in January 2019. The new system has a more vibrant and intuitive interface. It can play music from various sources, including USB, Bluetooth, FM/AM/DRM and AUX. It offers image and video playback support as well.

The Smartplay Studio infotainment system doesn’t have built-in navigation feature. However, it does allow smartphone-enabled navigation via the NaviMaps app from MapmyIndia. The system allows linking smartphones to it via Smartplay Studio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto apps. Also included in the package are AHA Radio, vehicle alerts, call/message and Smartplay Remote app support.

The Maruti Eeco, Maruti Celerio, Maruti Celerio X, Maruti Ciaz and Maruti S-Cross are the only models unavailable with the Smartplay Studio infotainment system now. The Maruti S-Cross has been temporarily discontinued and will be relaunched soon, and it’s safe to assume that it will gain this system at that time. The Maruti Ciaz also may get it later, but the other models are likely to remain as they are in the present generation.

Maruti XL6 vs. Maruti Ertiga - Maruti Suzuki’s MPV twins compared https://indianautosblog.com/maruti-xl6-vs-maruti-ertiga-maruti-suzukis-mpv-twins-compared-p320110 Sun, 29 Mar 2020 02:30:07 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=320110 The Maruti XL6 is the biggest offering from the stable of Maruti Suzuki’s Nexa chain of premium models and basically a rugged-looking version of Maruti Ertiga.

‘Same same, but different’ – a phrase which perfectly describes the picture having the Maruti XL6 as well as Maruti Ertiga in one common scene. The two MPVs share a lot in common with each other – the basic silhouette, interior cabin layout, engineering under the skin and majority of comfort and convenience as well as safety features.

However, both of them cater to completely different audiences, which make them possess different feel altogether. Yes, there are some major changes which do differentiate them from each other.

Maruti XL6 vs. Maruti Ertiga - Dimensions

Both the Maruti XL6 as well as Maruti Ertiga are based on the same platform and do get the same wheelbase of 2,740 mm. However, thanks to the minute sheet metal changes carried out all around the vehicle, the XL6 does look and actually possesses bigger dimensions over the Ertiga. The length, width and height of the XL6 are more than those of the Ertiga.

Dimensions Maruti XL6 Maruti Ertiga Difference
Length 4,445 mm 4,395 mm 50 mm
Width 1,775 mm 1,735 mm 40 mm
Height 1,700 mm 1,690 mm 10 mm
Wheelbase 2,740 mm 2,740 mm 0 mm

Maruti XL6 vs. Maruti Ertiga - Design

Exterior

The Maruti XL6 takes the already appealing design of the Maruti Ertiga and moulds it into a much bolder design.

Maruti XL6 vs Maruti Ertiga - Front three quarter look
The Maruti XL6 looks much bolder than the Maruti Ertiga when viewed from the front, thanks to the bigger full LED headlamps and a larger hexagonal grille.

The biggest and most evident difference between both the vehicles are at the front. While the Ertiga comes with a compact trapezoidal grille, the XL6 has a bigger and more aggressive-looking hexagonal grille. The headlamps of the XL6 are bigger and edgier.

Maruti XL6 vs Maruti Ertiga - Front three quarter look
Features like black alloy wheels, body cladding all around, silver skid plates and roof rails give the Maruti XL6 a certain muscularity over the Maruti Ertiga.

Also, while the Ertiga looks plain with its halogen projectors, the XL6 looks flashier because of its LED headlamps. The LED headlamps include daytime running LED placed in the middle, which blends well with the centre chrome garnish line of the grille. The XL6 also gets a silver finished skid plate and black plastic surround for the fog lamps.

The profile of the Maruti Ertiga and the Maruti XL6 looks almost the same, with both the vehicles sharing window panels, doors, 15-inch alloy wheels with same design and outside rearview mirrors. However, the XL6 gets the same alloy wheels and rearview mirrors painted in black, large roof rails and body cladding running across the length.

Maruti XL6 vs Maruti Ertiga - Rear
The black finish below the rear windscreen and silver skid plate with body cladding are the visually differentiating elements in the Maruti XL6 at the rear.

Both the Ertiga and the XL6 get the same setup of L-shaped tail lamps, a flat windshield and the same tailgate at the rear. The latter features a gloss black panel below the rear windshield running across the width of the car and a thick silver skid plate going with the rugged theme.

Interior

The interior of both the Maruti XL6 as well as the Maruti Ertiga is exactly the same – the difference lies in the colour theme and the trims. While the cabin of the Maruti XL6 is finished entirely in black with a layer of stone finish garnish running through the dashboard, the cabin of the Ertiga feels brighter with the dual-tone black and beige theme, with the atone finish being replaced here by faux wood.

Maruti XL6 vs Maruti Ertiga - Interior Cabin
The Maruti XL6 gets an all-black finish with black stone garnish, while the Maruti Ertiga has a black and beige upholstery with faux wood garnish.

Both the vehicles get the same flat-bottom multifunctional steering wheel as well as instrument console with coloured MID in between. The centre console, too, is exactly the same in both the vehicles, with a protruding 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system (the XL6 getting the latest Smartplay Studio system) and an automatic climate control panel below it.

A major difference is in the second row of seats of both the MPVs. While the Maruti XL6 gets two captain seats in the second row, the Maruti Ertiga has a bench which can accommodate three people abreast.

Maruti XL6 vs. Maruti Ertiga - Features

The Maruti XL6 and the Maruti Ertiga share a common list of features, which on the inside, includes a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple Carplay and Android Auto, push-button start with keyless entry, driver seat height adjustment, AC vents for all the three rows, tilt-adjustable steering and automatic climate control.

Being a more premium than the Ertiga, the XL6 does come with a few additional features in the form of LED headlamps, daytime running LEDs, LED fog lamps, leather seats and cruise control.

The list of safety features, however, is identical in both the vehicles, which includes dual front airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, reverse parking sensors with camera, ISOFIX mounts for child seats, electronic stability program and hill hold assist (the last two features being available only in the automatic variants).

Maruti XL6 vs. Maruti Ertiga - Engine & Transmission

The Maruti Ertiga and Maruti XL6 both are available with the K15B 1.5-litre petrol engine (104.69 PS/138 Nm) linked to a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic transmission. The former is available with a CNG version of the same engine as well. Running on CNG, the same engine's maximum power and maximum torque drop to 92.45 PS and 122 Nm respectively. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard in the CNG version.

Maruti XL6 vs. Maruti Ertiga - Mileage

Given that both the Maruti XL6 petrol and the Maruti Ertiga petrol share the same powertrain in the same state of tune, their fuel efficiency figures are identical. While the variants equipped with the manual gearbox deliver a fuel economy of 19.01 km/l, the automatic variants promise a fuel economy of 17.99 km/l. The Maruti Ertiga CNG has a fuel economy rating of 26.08 km/kg.

Maruti XL6 vs. Maruti Ertiga - Price*

The Maruti XL6 surely looks and feels more premium over the Maruti Ertiga, and for the additional equipment and rugged appeal it carries over the Ertiga, it does command a considerable premium over the latter, which is quite justifiable.

Model Manual Automatic
Maruti XL6 INR 9.85-10.42 lakh INR 10.95-11.51 lakh
Maruti Ertiga INR 7.59-9.71 lakh INR 9.36-10.13 lakh
