Top 5 Most Affordable Seven-Seater Cars You Can Buy in India https://indianautosblog.com/top-5-cheapest-7-seater-cars-india-p321419 Fri, 21 Aug 2020 03:00:06 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=321419 The 7-seater space is probably one of the most silent ones in the Indian market. Apart from the Renault Triber, a few badges that compete in the segment, are not less than 5 years old. However, this time last year, the arrival of the Triber shed some positive light on the segment. Considering that a good chunk of our population lives in extended families, a 7-seater car becomes a no-brainer. In addition to this, the segment could spark a new wave of demand, considering that public transport is set to lose its credibility in times of Covid-19, we share a glimpse of the cheapest 7 seater cars including some 7 seater cars in India below 5 lakhs and other badges in the Indian market that you should have a look at.

Visually, the Go+ resembles its five-seater sibling (Go) on the outside, inside as well as the sumptuous list of features for its price.

The Datsun Go+ stands as the most affordable 7-seater in India. The car, which is essentially a stretched Go with an additional row of seats, is right suited for a family of seven or less. Its last facelift was back in 2018 when the car benefited from a few tweaks inside and out. However, the icing on the cake came recently in the form of an option for an automatic transmission. Visually, the car resembles its five-seater sibling on the outside, inside as well as the sumptuous list of features for its price. This list includes elements like a 7.0-inch touchscreen system which offers all the functionality expected of a car in this segment like Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity and light and dark mode, deep door pockets, covered glove box, a rear parcel shelf. After an unsuccessful run with the Versa, Maruti Suzuki launched the Eeco that was aimed to walk in the footsteps of the glorified Omni in India. Maruti Eeco to be updated with BS6-compliant engine - Report https://indianautosblog.com/maruti-suzuki-eeco-updated-bs6-compliant-engine-p318565 Tue, 01 Oct 2019 07:22:34 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=318565 The Maruti Eeco is all set to receive a new lease of life in the form of a BS-VI compliant engine. Earlier this year, it had received various safety upgrades. It came with a driver-side airbag, ABS and rear parking sensors, and other updates as standard.

2019 Maruti Eeco
In order to meet the upcoming (1 April 2020) BS-VI standards, the Maruti Eeco will be updated with a BS-VI compliant engine.

Furthermore, the Maruti Eeco will also see a future update with some structural enhancements making it safe enough to pass the upcoming BNVSAP crash test norms which come into effect from 1 October 2019. Also, its front fascia will be updated as per upcoming pedestrian safety norms which will be seen into action from 1 October 2020.

In order to meet the upcoming (1 April 2020) BS-VI standards, the Maruti Eeco will be given a BS-VI compliant engine. The company will be left with no option but to upgrade the current 1.2L G-Series petrol engine, as the latest K-Series petrol engines aren't fit for the job because of their transverse-mounted, front-wheel-drive layout; the Eeco requires longitudinal engine layout and rear-wheel-drive architecture. The BS-IV 1.2L G-Series four-cylinder unit generates 73 PS and 101 Nm of torque in petrol form, and 63 PS and 85 Nm of torque when running on CNG. The engine delivers an ARAI-rated output of 15.37 km/l on gasoline and 21.94 km/kg on CNG. With the updated emissions, the output and fuel economy rating is expected to vary a little.

To offer the driver airbag in the Eeco, Maruti Suzuki had to introduce a new steering wheel. The new piece is borrowed from the Alto. Other than that, there are no cosmetic changes in the updated model.

The Maruti Eeco has gained ABS, driver airbag, rear parking sensors, speed warning alert and seatbelt reminder, presumably for both driver and front passenger.

The report says that with the MY2019 update, the Maruti Eeco has gained ABS, driver airbag, rear parking sensors, speed warning alert and seatbelt reminder, presumably for both driver and front passenger. These safety features, standard in the updated model, are going to become mandatory in India in a phased manner this year. Currently, no advanced safety features are provided in the van.

The Maruti Eeco will lose the Cargo variant made for transport of goods with the MY2019 update. Now, the range will include only the passenger, Tour and Care variants. The Tour variant is aimed at cab operators, while the Care variant is for ambulances. The passenger and Tour variants are available in 5- and 7-seat versions.

The Maruti Eeco is powered by the G12B 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine. This engine is available in petrol and petrol-CNG versions. Running on petrol, it produces 54 kW (73.42 PS) at 6,000 rpm and 101 Nm of torque at 3,000 rpm. Running on CNG, the maximum power and maximum torque reduce to 46 kW (62.54 PS) and 83 Nm respectively. The petrol engine model delivers a fuel economy of 16.2 km/l. The petrol-CNG model has a fuel economy rating of 21.8 km/kg (in CNG mode).

MSIL can either repurpose Eeco or build a Super Carry van to replace Maruti Omni https://indianautosblog.com/maruti-omni-replacement-p315033 Fri, 26 Oct 2018 09:05:37 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=315033 Maruti Suzuki may retire the Omni at the end of the decade, but exiting the microvan segment is not an option for the company as sales continue strong. The options in front of MSIL are either reposition the Eeco or launch a new successor to the Omni.

Maruti Eeco smiles editon profile
The Maruti Omni and Maruti Eeco together sold 88,887 units in H1 FY2019 - close to 15,000 units a month.

Despite having no modern amenities, design features or safety equipment, the Maruti Omni and Maruti Eeco find more customers than many advanced family vehicles. Last fiscal, their combined sales stood at 1,55,137 units - close to 13,000 units a month. In the first half of the current financial year, they registered 88,887 units in sales - close to 15,000 units a month.

Maruti Suzuki has sold more than 15.7 million units of the Omni since its launch in 1985. The Eeco, launched in 2010 as a repurposed Versa, crossed the milestone of 5 lakh sales earlier this month. BSVI emission norms and the BNVSAP new car assessment program that become effective in 2020 (April and October respectively) for existing models will make these microvans unfit, in their existing state, for our market.

Maruti Suzuki will discontinue the cheaper of the two microvans, the Omni, in 2020. That could mean the Eeco getting a BSVI-compliant engine and structural upgrades to pass through BNVSAP’s crash tests. It will require a new dashboard and steering wheel to accommodate an airbag.

Maruti cannot look outside for solutions, such as pulling out a 7-seater like the Solio from Suzuki's lineup, as they are not designed for the low-cost needs of the Indian base segments. The Solio is engineered for Japanese regulations and requirements and is packaged for expensive technology.

Another option Maruti Suzuki could look at is launching an all-new microvan based on the Super Carry light truck. Rival automaker Mahindra is already selling a passenger application based on its light truck Jeeto, and Tata Motors has two people movers on the Ace platform. IAB’s automotive illustrator Shoeb Kalania had presented a rendering of such an offering two years ago. The original LCV employs the Maruti Celerio’s 0.8-litre two-cylinder diesel engine that produces 24 kW (32.17 hp) and 75 Nm of torque, while export markets get the 1.2-liter petrol engine.

Maruti Eeco & Maruti Omni to be upgraded to meet safety regulations - Report https://indianautosblog.com/maruti-eeco-maruti-omni-upgrade-p301786 Tue, 27 Mar 2018 10:11:37 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=301786 MSIL is currently working on upgrading the Maruti Eeco and Maruti Omni to meet future safety regulations a report by MoneyControl has revealed. Crash test norms will come into effect in India October 1, 2019.

Maruti Eeco Global NCAP crash test
In the Global NCAP crash tests conducted in May 2016, the Eeco scored zero stars in the adult occupant protection and one star in child occupant protection.

Speaking to the publications, CV Raman, Senior Executive Director, Engineering, Maruti Suzuki, said -

We are working into this. We need to meet both the emission and safety norms. So we are evaluating various possibilities for all the models. Definitely our endeavor will be to make them (Omni and Eeco) meet (the norms). So the engineering work in going on for that.

9 out of the 15 products in Maruti's current lineup are already future safety regulations compliant. However, the Eeco and Omni, in their current forms, will require major upgrades to make them clear crash tests. They will also require upgrades in the engine department to make them BS-6 compliant.

Discontinuation of the two products seems unlikely as their combined contribution to total monthly MSIL sales is 9-10%. In February 2018, Maruti Eeco and Maruti Omni combined sales stood at 12,425 units.

Maruti Omni Cafe front three quarters
The Omni and Eeco together contribute to about 10% of total Maruti Suzuki sales in the domestic market.

Common to all these cars is a zero star crash test rating.

Maruti Eeco:

The Eeco scored zero stars in the adult occupant protection and one star in child occupant protection. The collapse of the structure in the passenger compartment makes the testing agency state that the bodyshell cannot withstand further loads. The Eeco is not offered with airbags or ABS even as optional.

Hyundai Eon:

The Hyundai Eon was tested without the optional driver airbag. The protection offered to the driver's head and chest was poor, while that of the passenger’s chest was marginal. The bodyshell was rated as unstable and is not capable of withstanding any further loadings.

Maruti Celerio:

Global NCAP tested the non-airbag and non-ABS variant of the Maruti Celerio. According to the testing agency, the protection offered to the driver's head, neck and chest was poor and the passenger’s chest
received marginal protection. Like the Eon, the structure was rated as unstable.

It is to be noted that the Thai-made Suzuki Celerio sold in the European market scored 3/5 in the Euro NCAP crash test.

All cars were crash tested at 64 km/h.

Despite not being refreshed, the Eeco brings healthy volumes for the company.

According to a report on the Business Standard, Maruti is indeed working on a facelift for the Eeco, and is expected to introduce it by September this year.

Offered in 5 and 7 seat configurations, the Eeco is powered by a 1.2-liter four-cylinder petrol engine which puts out 73 bhp at 6,000 rpm and 101 Nm of torque at 3,000 rpm, matched to a 5-speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels. The engine is unlikely to change in the refreshed model. Additionally, a CNG variant is also offered on the van.

The car's equipment level is quite basic, with air-conditioning the only notable features on offer. Safety features like airbags, ABS or even power steering are not offered even as optional extras.

Report - Maruti Eeco diesel to launch in 2016; To rival Tata Ace Magic https://indianautosblog.com/maruti-eeco-diesel-launch-in-2016-p128775 Fri, 25 Apr 2014 06:36:47 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=128775 A Financial Express newspaper report states that Maruti will launch a diesel-powered Eeco in 2016. The Maruti Eeco diesel will be pitched as a commuter van, competing (in terms of price and application) with the Tata Ace Magic and the Mahindra Maxximo.

Maruti Suzuki EECO
The Maruti Eeco will be offered with a diesel motor come 2016.

The Eeco diesel will be marketed predominantly in rural and semi-urban markets as a last mile transporter. While the van is currently available with a petrol engine as well as CNG, only about 15 cities in India retail CNG, that is turning out to be a very expensive fuel option. In Tier II and Tier III areas especially, diesel continues to be the natural choice of fuel.

A Maruti official told the newspaper that the share of rural markets in total sales currently stands at 32 percent, which is an increase from 28 percent two years ago. Cars such as the Wagon R, Alto, Omni and Eeco are top sellers in these markets, the official revealed.

Mahindra Maxximo Mini Van side
The main competitors to the Eeco diesel are the Mahindra Maxximo Minivan and the Tata Ace Magic.

A company source says that the Eeco will gradually replace the Omni. The source further said that the diesel engine for the Eeco will be the very same diesel engine that will be used in Maruti's upcoming LCV codenamed Y9T. This engine, which is likely to be an 800 cc two-cylinder motor, will be Maruti's first self-developed diesel engine as the brand currently relies on Fiat for its diesel powertrains.
