Although the old FK8-generation set a faster time of 7:43.8 back in 2017, the new model is considered faster because the 2019 guidelines for lap records required the time to be measured along the complete 12.93-mile Nordschleife. Honda did not release both 12.8- and 12.93-mile times, unlike Porsche and Mercedes-AMG. However, based on a rough estimation of the video, the Type R covered the 12.8 miles in around 7:39.681, or a little over four seconds faster than its predecessor.

2022 Honda Civic - Design, Interior and Engine Options

The new Honda Civic is a lot sleeker and less fussy than its predecessor. Honda has nailed the proportions with this new-gen Civic with a proper three-box sedan styling. The face looks cleaner with slimmer, rectangular headlamps and a revised grille. The front bumper with its wide central air dam adds some boldness to the face. The profile is relatively simple and at the rear, the Civic comes with a more conservative design that's very unlike a Civic. Overall, the new Honda Civic sports a striking resemblance with the Accord, with smooth body panels and long shoulder lines that run the length of the car.

On the inside, Honda debuts its new 'Simplicity and Something' interior design philosophy with the new Civic. The cabin looks uncluttered with clean horizontal lines running across the dashboard. Its minimalistic with a low-set dashboard and large glasshouse area for improved visibility. The AC vents hidden behind the honeycomb mesh on the dashboard is a really nice design touch. The 9.0-inch floating infotainment screen is the largest for any Honda vehicle and it also gets a fully-digital instrument cluster in top-spec trims.

Under the hood, the new Honda Civic gets two engine options - there's a 2.0L, naturally asperated petrol engine that produces 158hp and 187Nm of peak torque. There's also a 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 180hp and 240Nm of torque. Surprisingly, there's no touch of electrification on either engines. Both engines are offered only with the option of a CVT gearbox and power is sent to the front wheels.

But here's why we are not excited about it....

As exciting as the new Honda Civic may be, it sadly won't make it to India. Late last year, Honda discontinued the 10th-generation Civic in India due to dismal sales with the entire D-segment sedan space dwindling over the years. Once a vibrant segment with the likes of the Volkswagen Jetta, Toyota Corolla, Skoda Octavia, Hyundai Elantra and the Honda Civic, it is only the Hyundai that continues to remain on sale today. Thankfully, Skoda too will make a come back in this segment with the next-gen Octavia. The reason for the demise? Well, that has to be changing customer preferences in favor of SUVs and manufacturers then bombarding the market with the same.

Out of 11 generations of the Civic, we have only had two generations of the sedan on sale in India - the 8th-gen model and the 10th-gen model. Honda first brought the Civic nameplate to India in 2005 as the 8th-gen model. At that time, the Civic was much ahead of its time in India, thanks to its beautiful i-Vtec motor and futuristic design. Heck, it was even offered with a hybrid petrol engine in 2005. However, it couldn’t keep up with more aggressive pricing by rivals - especially Toyota Corolla - and didn’t have any diesel engine option either. Honda eventually discontinued the 8th-gen Civic in India in 2012.

It was again in 2018 when Honda reintroduced the Civic nameplate in India in its 10th-generation avatar, four years after it was introduced globally. However, by this time, the market had already started its shift towards SUVs and it was too late for the Civic in India. Before being discontinued last year, Honda kept the Civic on sale for several months with heavy discounts but it still failed to manage significant numbers. It was eventually pulled off the shelves. The Civic has always had a bittersweet relationship with India - it was loved by enthusiasts but not bought by buyers. Given the current market preference, Honda is unlikely to bring the new Civic to India but that also opens up scope for Honda to explore the SUV space, somewhere they clearly do not have much presence currently. Perhaps Honda should consider the new-gen HR-V for India to take on the mid-size SUV space. That's be something really exciting to watch out for.

Advancement in technology has obviously brought in much more capabilities and connectivity but it has also created its own challenges. Simplicity is thus the key word with Honda's new design philosophy. The interior of a car should not just be about styling that attracts attention to itself but it should have high functionality. Honda has thus paid attention to other aspects of interior design, such as visibility, with thin pillars, low cowl and large glass section for enhanced visibility. Cabin ergonomics, with things falling into hand easily, have also been a huge area of focus with Honda's new interior design philosophy.

In terms of design, the preview gives us a glimpse of a rather clutter-free interior. Clean, horizontal lines on the dashboard and neatly integrated AC vents evoke a sense of simplicity. The dashboard is dominated by a floating touchscreen infotainment system and the three-spoke steering wheel looks stylish and is yet very functional with steering mounted controls. Honda is adopting a “Man Maximum/Machine Minimum” approach that will see cabin space maximized while minimizing space required for mechanical components. The interior will also feature items that 'evoke a positive emotional response'. Known as ‘somethings', these elements will be unique and personal to each model, helping to differentiate products.

With regard to simplicity and high functional value, Honda have retained physical dials for the volume control and climate controls, large and easy to recognize icons for the infotainment screen, fast processing speed, simplified navigation system with fewer embeded menus and easy access to frequently used functions. The carmaker hopes to make your future Honda vehicle "something you want to drive and are excited to use.” We will have better idea of what to expect when Honda finally unveils the 2022 Civic tomorrow.

The recall will be carried out in a phased manner and has already started from April 17, 2021. The carmaker has released a detailed list of all the models that have been affected, including their production period and the number of units of each model that have been fitted with the faulty fuel pump. Barring the fifth-gen Honda City, the recall has affected every other Honda car in India. The vehicle most affected by this recall is the Honda Amaze with as many as 36,086 units fitted with the faulty fuel pump.

The recall also includes 20,248 units of the fourth-gen Honda City, 7,871 units of the WR-V, 6,235 units of the Jazz hatchback, 5,170 units of the Civic sedan, and 1,737 units of the BR-V. All these vehicles were manufactured between January and October 2019. Additionally, the recall also covers 607 units of the Honda CR-V that were manufactured between January 2019 and September 2020. It must be noted that the Honda CR-V, Civic and BR-V have been discontinued in India.

Vehicles manufactured before or after the above-mentioned time period do not have the suspected fuel pump issue. This recall could actually be a part of a global recall that Honda initiated in March 2021. Earlier last month, Honda had said that they will recall about 761,000 vehicles worldwide to replace fuel pumps that could fail and lead to engine problems. Given the current situation with the pandemic in the country, Honda dealers are operating with limited staff. Customers are advised to visit dealerships with prior appointment to adhere to pandemic protocols.

Honda's authorized dealer partners will be contacting the owners of the affected vehicles individually. The replacement of the part will be carried out free of cost to the customer. Additionally, owners can also check whether their cars are covered under this campaign by entering the 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the special microsite which has been created on the company's website.

Honda's first official preview of the 11th-gen Civic comes in it's top-spec Touring trim and as was expected, it is nearly identical to the prototype version. The only differences are the several blacked-out elements from the prototype that have been swapped for more production-spec design elements. For instance, the glossy black accents on the front bumper and air-intake trim are gone. Instead, the production-spec Civic gets matte black trim on both the upper and lower grille. The blacked-out ORVMs and window surround too have been replaced with body-colored and chrome trim pieces respectively.

The 11th-gen Honda Civic boasts of slimmer, but more rectangular headlamps and a revised grille. The front bumper features a wide central air dam with a honeycomb mesh grille, flanked by fog lamps on either side. The prototype's all-black wheels have made way for two-tone sets while the black trim on the side skirts now come in the same color as the body. This first preview only gives us a look at the front quarter of the sedan. From spy shots seen before, we know the rear end of the next-gen Civic comes with a more conservative design that's very unlike a Civic. The tail lamps ditch their distinct C-shaped identity and adopt a sleeker, more conventional design.

The new layout is a giant leap over its predecessor with a minimalist, low and horizontal design theme. It will have air vents that are concealed by a mesh and run along the length of the dash. The dashboard is dominated by a touchscreen infotainment system that is as large as 9-inches, and the instrument cluster will be fully digital as well.

Sadly Honda has discontinued the Civic nameplate in India and it is not likely to make a comeback either. The upcoming sedan will be the first of a slew of launches that Honda is planning for the next-gen Civic. Following the sedan will be the hatchback, then the Si and finally the Type R.

A look at the rear of this car reveals that this is the new Civic as built by Dongfeng-Honda, the joint venture that produces the Japanese automaker's products and it sells within China. Past Civics sold in China have been mostly similar to those sold elsewhere around the world. This Honda Civic hails from Pakistan and the mod job clearly draws its inspiration from a Lamborghini. The front end of this Civic has been modified with a huge gaping bumper with large air intakes that seem to mimic the ones on a Lamborghini Huracan Performante. The chiseled nose looks particularly striking when viewed in profile, more so like a Lamborghini. The bumper also features front skirts that give it an even more hunkered-down look. Interestingly, the headlamps have been left as stock, although we think a pair of LED DRLs would have really helped the look of this car.

In profile, this modified Civic features flared arches over both the front and rear wheels and the side skirts further add to its sporty persona. The stock wheels have been swapped for a set of blacked-out multi-spoke alloy wheels wrapped in low-profile tires. At the rear, this modified Civic features a well-sculpted bumper with a large diffuser element. Just like the front, the taillights continue to be stock units. Again, a spoiler mounted on the boot would have really upped the look of the car, particularly when it's trying to look like a Lamborghini.

The 8th-gen Honda Civic was introduced in 2006 in Pakistan and was available till the end of 2012. This particular modified example does not seem to feature any performance upgrades. In Pakistan, the 8th-gen Honda Civic was offered with a 1.8L inline 4-cylinder i-VTEC petrol engine, the same that was offered with the 8th-gen Civic in India. It was offered with both a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed automatic gearbox. In India, the 8th-gen Civic was also offered with a 1.3-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine paired to an electric motor. And how the acceleration has changed from generation to generation can be viewed "here".

Interestingly, while Pakistan went on to have the 9th-generation of the Civic from 2013, Honda entirely skipped the 9th-gen model for India, until we finally got the 10th-gen model in 2018. More recently, Honda even discontinued to 10th-gen of the Civic in India due to low sales. This was brought about by dwindling sales in the sedan segment and steep pricing of the Civic in India on account of it being a CKD. That said, the Honda Civic remains a benchmark in handling and driving pleasure all over the world.

Honda closed operation at their Greater Noida plant as they were not being able to meet the full capacity of the plant. Apart from the Civic and the CR-V being assembled here, Honda also manufactured the City sedan at the Greater Noida plant. The production of the City sedan will now be completely shifted to the Tapukara plant in Rajasthan, and while that could be done, the Civic and the CR-V cannot be assembled there. The Tapukara plant was conceived as an integrated plant with high efficiency to produce small and mid-size cars and it can only manufacture vehicles of a certain size.

The Civic and the CR-V are thus being discontinued because they cannot be produced here in India anymore. Apart from production related issues, it also has to be considered that the Civic and the CR-V were Honda's lowest selling models, particularly in the aftermath of the pandemic. Honda sold only about 850 units of the Civic and a little over 100 units of the CR-V in the entire of the last six months. In comparison, Honda sells about 4,000 units of the City on an average each month while the Amaze remains their best seller with an average of over 5,000 units a month. Even the WR-V manages over 1,000 units a month while the Jazz manages an average of 700 units.

The Amaze, WR-V and the Jazz were already being produced at Honda's plant in Rajasthan and now the City will join them too. Honda's sales had been rapidly declining over the last few years in India. The decision to close the manufacturing plant in Greater Noida and rationalizing their product line-up are part of Honda’s efforts to improve operating efficiencies and safeguard its future in India. Honda is indeed committed to a long-term presence in the Indian market and their future product investment plans have not been curtailed by this development.

It is however a loss to lose these flagship Honda cars in India, particularly the Civic. It is only because both these models were CKDs and were priced significantly on the premium side, they could not make their presence felt in India. The Honda Civic was already operating in a lonely sedan space but that does not take away the fact that it was an extremely nice car. The lack of a well-packaged, well-priced SUV in Honda's lineup also particularly strikes hard right now.

That includes a cash discount of INR 15,000 along with an exchange benefit of up to INR 10,000. It also includes extended warranty for the 4th and 5th year worth INR 12,000. The Amaze Special Edition is available with benefits of up INR 15,000 which includes a cash discount of INR 7,000 and an exchange bonus of up to INR 8,000. The Exclusive Edition of the Amaze is meanwhile available with benefits of up to INR 27,000, which includes cash discount and exchange benefit of up to INR 12,000 and INR 15,000 respectively.

Moving on the BS6 Jazz, you can grab benefits of up to INR 40,000. This includes a cash discount and exchange benefit of INR 25,000 and INR 15,000 respectively. Even the new-gen Honda City can be had with benefits of up to INR 30,000. This discount can however only be availed as an exchange scheme and there are no cash discounts on offer. Both the petrol and diesel versions of the WR-V are again available with benefits of up to INR 40,000 which includes a cash discount and exchange benefit of INR 25,000 and INR 15,000 respectively.

The WR-V Exclusive Edition can be had with a cash discount of INR 10,000 and car exchange discount of INR 15,000, total benefits thus amounting to INR 25,000. As ever, Honda has the biggest discount on both the petrol and diesel versions of the Civic sedan. The petrol versions of the  Civic can be had with cash discounts of INR 1 lakh across all variants. Meanwhile, diesel versions of the Civic are available with a massive discount of up to INR 2.5 lakh. Even if you missed out on the festive season, you can still buy your favorite Honda car with these amazing Honda discounts on offer.
