Top 5 Motorcycles You Can Buy In India Under INR 1 Lakh: Hero, Bajaj and More https://indianautosblog.com/top-5-motorcycles-under-1-lakh-p321347 Sun, 09 Aug 2020 05:00:29 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=321347 India is a price-sensitive market and as the lockdown eases across the country, several studies suggest that public transport is set to lose its charm. People would now prefer their personal vehicles over the fear of virus contamination. It is also to be noted that the country is home to one of the biggest markets for two-wheelers around the world. Hence, when you put two and two together, it could be speculated that the market for affordable motorcycles say under INR 1 lakh* is soon expected to witness a boom.

Top 5 Motorcycles Under 1 Lakh
If you are looking for your next motorcycle under INR 1 lakh*, here is our carefully curated list of the best ones out there.

Hence as the concept of ‘new normal’ settle in the minds of people, motorcycle manufacturers are scrambling for a piece of a pie that manufacturers like Hero currently dominates. Given that India is also home for one of the largest population of people under the age of 35, the offerings would be aimed at pleasing the youth while being light on their pockets. So if you fit the bill and are looking for your next motorcycle under INR 1 lakh*, here is our carefully curated list of the best ones out there.

Hero Xtreme 160 R

At the outset, allow us to tell you that the motorcycle begins very close to our price limit, but remains in the ballpark. The 160 R is the typical embodiment of all the criteria mentioned above. Aimed at the beginner crowd, check. Aimed at capturing customers looking for an affordable commuter, check. Aimed at capturing customers looking the oomph in an entry-level motorcycle, check.

The Xtreme 160 R is Hero’s first stab at the 160-cc segment in India. The motorcycle was first showcased at last year’s EICMA as the Concept 1.R. Since then, not a lot has changed in the motorcycle. A fleeting glimpse on the design of the bike and one might fail to believe that it is a Hero. Unlike the Xtreme 200 R which was an uprated Xtreme Sports, the 160 R does not share its roots with any other offering.

At its heart is a 163-cc liquid-cooled engine that puts out 15bhp and 14Nm of torque. While these are not segment-leading figures, the bike tips the scale at just 139 kg, which is the lightest in its segment. The motorcycle gets a digital instrument cluster that shows all the necessary information except for a gear-position indicator. It gets a parking light as well, which is a segment-first.

Bajaj Pulsar 125

Bajaj Pulsar 125 Rhs
The smallest Pulsar was launched not so long ago. In comparison to its stablemates, the Pulsar 125 is comparatively new.

The smallest Pulsar was launched not so long ago. In comparison to its stablemates, the Pulsar 125 is comparatively new, which means Bajaj was most opportune to prepare an offering that can meet today’s expectations.

The motorcycle completely resembles its siblings in terms of cosmetics with the neon graphics and the slimmer tyres being only differentiating elements. At its heart is a 124-cc engine that churns out 11.6bhp and 11Nm of torque. The engine is a derivative of the 150cc units that power the Pulsar 150 keeping its aura the same.

Might we add that while the Pulsar brand has been a mainstay for Bajaj in the past and has secured a spot for itself in the market, the design language and the mechanicals deserve a much-needed revamp to ditch the elements that are over a decade old.

Honda SP 125

Honda Sp 125 First Ride Review Still Shots Left Si
The SP 125 very well could be a case study for the ideal commuter offering.

The Honda SP 125 is essentially Honda’s attempt to maintain or even get a better grip at the commuter segment in India. The motorcycle very well embodies the ‘new normal’. If the ‘new normal’ could be seen as the potential and the capabilities that commuters under INR 1 lakh* are offering.

The SP 125 very well could be a case study for the ideal commuter offering. It is powered by a 124-cc engine that delivers 10.6bhp and 10.9Nm of torque. The motorcycle comes with a part-digital, part-analogue instrument cluster that shows ample information. It also features Honda’s silent smart technology that avoids mesh grinding for ignition.

Bajaj Avenger Street 160

Avenger Street 160 Abs Spicy Red Right Side
The motorcycle is powered by the same engine that powers the Pulsar NS160. It delivers 15bhp and a little over 13Nm of torque.

The list would be incomplete without a cruiser. With the popularity that cruisers hold in India, it is quite difficult to get one under INR 1 lakh*. However, Bajaj’s Avenger comes as the sole offering that fits the bill perfectly. While its elder sibling, the Avenger 220, has not seen much turmoil in its lifecycle, the story is not the same as the smallest one.

What is now a 160-cc offering started its life as a 150-cc unit. The same iteration excelled in terms of pricing and fuel efficiency but lacked in terms of performance. To fix the same, Bajaj then increased the displacement to 180cc. However, as Bajaj found out that a majority of its buyers were expecting a commute friendly iteration, the poor fuel efficiency that came alongside the apt performance started weighing heavy. Hence, its current iteration was launched, an iteration that fits in the sweet spot between its two predecessors.

Being old in the tooth, the motorcycle does not offer much in terms of features, but makes up for the same in engine performance and ride quality. Remember, that the idea was to make cruiser motorcycles more accessible and Bajaj did a splendid job for the same. The motorcycle is powered by the same engine that powers the Pulsar NS160. It delivers 15bhp and a little over 13Nm of torque.

TVS Apache RTR 160

Bs Vi Tvs Apache Rtr 160 Side Profile
The bike gets a single-channel ABS and a few features like a semi-digital instrument cluster.

The lowest variant of the previous-gen Apache RTR 160 falls under our price bracket. While the design might not be as compelling as its newer version, the bike does have a place in the segment. The numbers on paper resemble that of the Hero Xtreme 160 R with a 159-cc engine that outputs 15.1bhp and 13.9Nm of torque. The bike gets a single-channel ABS and a few features like a semi-digital instrument cluster.

Having said that, TVS Apache has always enticed buyers looking for a more sporty and performance oriented motorcycle in budget. There are other, more powerful versions of the TVS Apache available in the market as well.

India today has one of the most stringent emission norms, the Bharat Stage-VI. While this change is good for the environment, it has brought major price hikes. Motorcycles are no different and still have become 7-10% more expensive now. Below are the best bikes under 1 lakh in India:

Hero Splendor iSmart 110 (INR 67,100)

The new Hero Splendor iSmart 110's BS6 is best bikes under 1 lakh in Indian

The Hero Splendor name needs no introduction. It is the largest selling motorcycle range in the country. The Hero Splendor iSmart has gained several new features and this has increased its price significantly. However, with a price tag of INR 67,100 (ex-showroom, Delhi), the Hero Splendor iSmart 110 is still a very compelling product.

Hero now offers the Splendor iSmart with a new fuel-injected engine. The 113.2 cc air-cooled mill produces 9 PS of power and 9.89 Nm of torque. The BS6 engine offers 10% more torque and leads to an 88% reduction in NOx emissions. Other features include an Idle Stop and Start System (i3S), 18-inch alloy wheels, side stand indicator and a front disc brake. Besides that, the BS6 Hero Splendor iSmart 110 boasts 180 mm ground clearance, a 15 mm improvement over the discontinued model.

The new Hero Splendor iSmart 110 is retailed in three colour options: Techno Blue and Black, Sports Red and Black, and Force Silver and Heavy Grey.

Honda SP 125 (INR 73,452)

The Honda SP 125 replaces the Honda CB Shine SP 125 and is retailed in two variants.

Honda has rebranded its premium commuter CB Shine SP 125 to SP 125. The company has tried to offer a sporty alternative in the executive commuter segment, with an accessible price tag of INR 73,452 for the drum brake variant and INR 77,652 for the disc brake variant (both prices ex-showroom, Delhi).

Powering the Honda SP 125 is a 124 cc fuel-injected mill which is coupled to a five-speed gearbox. This engine produces 10.88 PS of power and 10.9 Nm of torque. Honda says that thanks to Enhanced Smart Power (eSP) technology, the Honda SP 125 is 16% more fuel-efficient than its predecessor.

The Honda SP 125 is fitted with an ACG starter which helps in silent starts. Besides it gets an LED headlamp, digital instrumentation, low rolling resistance tyres, and a first in segment engine start-stop switch. Besides, Honda offers a six-year warranty with the SP 125 (three years standard and three years optional).

Customers can get the Honda SP 125 in four colour options: Striking Green, Imperial Red Metallic, Pearl Siren Blue, and Matte Axis Grey Metallic.

Bajaj Pulsar 150 Neon (INR 85,536)

The Bajaj Pulsar 150 Neon is one of the best bikes under 1 lakh in india

Introduced first in 2001, the Bajaj Pulsar brand has been instrumental in changing the way India rides. The Pulsar 150 has over the years gained on the price tag front over the years. However, the company does offer a more affordable, funkier looking variant now, the Bajaj Pulsar 150 Neon, targeting the youth. At INR 85,536, (ex-showroom, Delhi) it is around INR 13,000 cheaper than the standard Pulsar 150 (discs at both ends).

The Bajaj Pulsar 150 Neon looks very similar to the standard Pulsar 150, save for the neon colouring on the badging, single-piece grabrail, tank extension and faux vent on the side panel. It is fitted with a halogen headlamp while the instrumentation is the familiar semi-digital unit with an analogue tachometer and digital speedometer.

At the heart of the Bajaj Pulsar 150 Neon is a 149.5 cc air-cooled, two-valve, twin-spark engine. Coupled to a five-speed gearbox, it can produce 14 PS of power and 13.4 Nm of torque.

The Bajaj Pulsar 150 Neon is retailed in three colours: Neon Red, Neon Green, and Neon Lime Green.

TVS Apache RTR 160 (INR 95,000)

Bs Vi Tvs Apache Rtr 160 Side Profile
The TVS Apache RTR 160 retains the dated semi-digital instrumentation console with a blue backlight.

The BS-VI transition has seen several motorcycle manufacturers axe their old products, but that’s not the case with the TVS Apache RTR 160. Positioned as a more affordable offering in the 150-160 cc segment as compared to its 4-valved cousin, the TVS Apache RTR 160 is priced at INR 95,000 for the drum brake variant and INR 98,000 for the disc brake variant (both prices, ex-showroom, Delhi).

Continuing with the same design philosophy, the TVS Apache RTR 160 is powered by a 159.7 cc air-cooled, two-valve mill. Coupled to a five-speed gearbox, the engine can dish out 15.53 PS of power and 13.9 Nm of torque. The bike's features list includes GTT (Glide Through Traffic), adjustable split clip styled handlebar, adaptable brake pedal and gear lever, split grabrail and semi-digital instrumentation.

While the motorcycle seems good on paper, with all desired features and specifications, there's one major gripe. The TVS Apache RTR 160’s powerplant is prone to producing vibrations at high engine speeds.

The TVS Apache RTR 160 is available in six colour options: Pearl White, Matte Blue, Gloss Red, Gloss Black, T Grey, and Matte Red.

One of the most affordable cruiser motorcycles available in India is the Bajaj Avenger Street 160. Looking almost identical to the bigger, more expensive Street 220, the Bajaj Avenger Street 160 is priced at INR 94,893 (ex-showroom, Delhi).

The powertrain in the Bajaj Avenger Street 160 is a 160 cc air-cooled, DTS-i mill which is capable of producing 15 PS of power and 13.7 Nm of torque. In terms of features, the Bajaj Avenger Street 160 gets alloy wheels, halogen headlamp with LED daytime running light, digital instrumentation and a 130 mm rear tyre which Bajaj for some weird reason calls ‘super wide’.

This was quite an achievement in itself. Today, the company has announced that its BS-VI scooter and bike sales have crossed 5.5 lakh units.

Honda Sp 125 First Ride Review Still Shots Left Si
The BS-VI Honda SP 125 was launched in November 2019 for a starting price of INR 72,900* (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Honda was one of the first two-wheeler manufacturers in India to start selling BS-VI compliant products much before the deadline. The latest additions to its BS-VI product line-up are BS-VI Honda CB Shine and BS-VI Honda Unicorn. This makes Honda the only two-wheeler manufacturer in India with a total of six BS-VI compliant models available in the market - Activa 125, SP 125, Activa 6G, Shine, Unicorn and Dio.

Honda’s first BS-VI two-wheeler was the Activa 125. It was launched in September 2019. Even though Honda has issued two recalls for some of its BS-VI two-wheelers in less than a month, its sales don’t seem to be affected by that. And if things kept on going at this pace, it wouldn’t be long before we will be reporting about Honda crossing another major sales figure soon.

This is one of the reasons why it has now sold over 3 lakh BS-VI two-wheelers in the country.

The Honda Activa continues to have the same 109 cc engine as before, but in a cleaner, BS-VI version.

Commenting on achieving this milestone, Yadvinder Singh Guleria, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt Ltd, said, “Honda was the first two-wheeler manufacturer to lead the BS-VI transition almost 6 months ahead of the deadline. Over 3 lakh customers are now experiencing a quiet revolution led by Honda’s advanced technologies like eSP, many first-in-segment features like ACG starter motor and significant mileage-up."

It was in September 2019 when Honda launched its first BS-VI two-wheeler in India, the new Activa 125. Powered by a new greener and cleaner 124 cc single-cylinder, fuel-injected engine, this scooter marked the beginning of the BS-IV to BS-VI conversion for the Japanese firm. With the BS-VI Activa 125, Honda introduced its new ACG silent start system and also started integrating its Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-Fi) technology and doing away with carburettors.

Soon after launching the BS-VI Activa 125, Honda was up and ready with its next BS-VI compliant two-wheeler, the new SP 125. The company launched it in two variants - drum and disc - and claimed that it was 16% more fuel-efficient than the BS-IV version.

The Japanese manufacturer also claims that it has completed the transition to 100 per cent BS-VI production. The new emission norms are set to be implemented across the country on 1 April 2020.

BS- VI Honda SP 125 - First Ride Review https://indianautosblog.com/honda-sp-125-bs-vi-first-ride-review-p319230 Mon, 23 Dec 2019 11:45:30 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=319230 Honda already has a firm grip on the 125 cc commuter segment with its CB Shine, but the company is in no mood to sit back and relax. To ensure that it attracts young buyers, Honda has introduced the SP 125. Previously, the SP badge was associated with the Shine range. However, this offering in the premium commuter segment has dropped the Shine tag and gained new features to create a product that will appeal to young buyers. We recently test rode the motorcycle, and here are our first impressions of the Honda SP 125 BS- VI.

The Honda SP 125 BS-VI is available in two variants - drum (INR 72,900) and disc (INR 77,100) - and four colour options.

Honda SP 125 BS- VI - Design

As mentioned above, Honda aims to attract young buyers with the SP 125 and it has designed the SP 125 accordingly. Thus, you would find sharp styling that is further accentuated by bright graphics. The feature list is equally alluring. The front fascia, for example, features a full LED headlight along with a body-coloured cowl and matching graphics. Small details such as fin-style design next to the headlight further enhance the aesthetics of the SP 125.

The feature list continues to impress as you continue towards the cockpit. The instrument console of the Honda SP 125 packs a full-digital display that offers information such as fuel gauge, speedometer, odometer, gear position indicator, real-time fuel economy, overall fuel efficiency, distance to empty, two trip meters, service due indicator and a clock. An Eco indicator helps indicate the optimum throttle input for maximum fuel economy. The switchgear, too, gets a touch of modern features. The ignition button, for example, is integrated into the engine kill switch. The high and low beam switch on the left side of the switchgear also offers control to the pass function.

The lean, yet muscular looks continue on to the fuel tank, and the shrouds give a beefy look to the overall package. The tank cowl is accompanied by another extension that mimics radiator shroud design. Another panel with a carbon fibre texture sits under the fuel tank. The 3D Honda logo magnifies the premium look of the vehicle.

The side panel continues to pack the same colour and graphics as the fuel tank, while the rear panel features a grey finish to add a contrast to the visuals. The tail section features a styling stoplight. Other key styling features include a dual-tone finish to the exhaust heat shield, split-style pattern to the alloy wheels and the fibre saree guard.

The new SP 125 is available in four colour options – Striking Green, Imperial Red Metallic, Pearl Siren Blue and Matte Axis Grey Metallic.

To sum it up, the Honda SP 125 is indeed an appealing motorcycle, and it should attract a fair amount of young buyers who are looking for a vehicle that looks stylish and is affordable to purchase and maintain. The fit and finish levels are equally commendable, and we did not hear any unpleasant sounds in the form of rattling from the body panels.

On the downside, the skinny (80/100-18) tyre at the back does not do justice to the overall aesthetics of the SP 125, although it is being used for low rolling resistance (resulting in better fuel economy) and affordable price tag.

Honda SP 125 BS- VI - Engine and Performance

The new Honda SP 125 is the first BS-VI compliant motorcycle from the Indian arm of the Japanese two-wheeler brand. Thus, it comes equipped with a fuel injection system. The 124 cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled motor with Enhanced Smart Power (eSP) produces 10.7 hp of peak power at 7,500 rpm and 10.9 Nm of maximum torque at 6,000 engine revs. The engine is paired with a five-speed transmission that feels smooth and crisp.

Honda Sp 125 First Ride Review Detail Shots Engine
The BS-VI compliant motor benefits from fuel injection, Silent Start and Enhanced Smart Power (eSP) system.

In terms of character, the engine makes a good amount of low- and mid-range power. Due to the lack of a tachometer, we would use speed as an indication for the power delivery. The third gear can chug along under 30 km/h, although it starts to pull away cleanly post that mark. The fourth gear is good for anywhere above 40 km/h. The fifth gear is ideal for highway cruising as the motorcycle sits comfortably around 80 km/h mark with very little stress on the engine. A ton on the speedometer is achievable too, although it will take some amount of crouching to reduce the drag. With a 90 kg rider on board, we could clock a maximum speed of 107 km/h. Other key features on the SP 125 include Silent Start with ACG.

We tested the front disc/rear drum brake version of the SP 125, and the feedback was adequate. The braking system feels progressive, although it could have worked even better with some more bite. It should, however, suffice for city use. We did not test the front drum brake version of the motorcycle, and thus we cannot comment on its braking performance. The safety net comprises Combi-brake System (CBS) with equalizer.

The overall performance from Honda's latest offering is solid; it briskly leaves at the green light. The touch of sportiness to the exhaust note is appealing, and we are sure the young buyers will not be disappointed.

Honda SP 125 BS- VI - Ride and Handling

As aforementioned, the engine packs a pinch of sportiness, although that does not translate into unpleasant vibrations – at least in the low- to mid-range of the rev band. There is some vibration from the footpegs closer to redline. Honda has also used a piston cooling jet that is aimed to reduce friction.

Honda Sp 125 First Ride Review Action Shots Left S
The Honda SP 125 feels refined in the low- and mid-range. Some vibrations, however, are noticeable closer to redline.

In terms of comfort, the SP 125 packs typical commuter-oriented ergonomics. We test rode the motorcycle for a very short duration, and thus we cannot comment on the long ride comfort levels. That said, we did not suffer from any sore-rear issues during our brief ride.

The suspension setup, which comprises telescopic forks at the front and twin-sided, preload adjustable springs at the back, is on the softer side for plush ride quality, and the SP 125 glides over most of the undulations efficiently. The hunt for a secluded place to photograph the vehicle took us through some broken asphalt, and the SP 125 did not disappoint. To enhance the pillion comfort, the grab rail at the back gets a rubber finish.

As we said in the design part of the review, the SP 125 comes with a skinny rear tyre, and so, do not expect it to go canyon carving. The overall feedback is sufficient just for city use.

Honda SP 125 BS- VI - Verdict

Variant Price in Ex-showroom in Delhi
Drum Brake Rs. 77,145
Disc Brake Rs. 81,441

The BS-VI Honda SP 125 works well as an overall package. The styling is appealing, while the engine performance, fit and finish and refinement levels are commendable, and it should attract young buyers. Apart from the skinny rear tyre and the lack of initial bite from the front disc brake, we would not change a thing about the SP 125. The drum brake version of the Honda SP 125 is available at INR 77,145*, while the disc variant, which we tested for the first ride report, is priced at INR 81,441*.

The lean and muscular styling works well with the premium feature list, and the SP 125 should Shine brightly in the 125 cc segment of the Indian motorcycle market.

The baby Pulsar is available in front disc brake version only, and it retails at INR 66,618*. Do note that the price of the Pulsar 125 is for the BS-IV version. The BS-VI version will be costlier.

Do note that Honda has already launched the BS-VI compliant Activa 125 scooter and SP 125 motorcycle in the Indian market. The company has clocked promising numbers with the BS-VI Activa 125.

The display also includes an On-Board Diagnostic light.

The fuel tank shrouds and the edgy graphics will appeal to the young buyers in the segment. The shrouds add a muscular look to the package. The 3D Honda logo in a chrome finish adds a premium touch to the styling. The side panel uses the same paint as the fuel tank, while the rear panel gets a contrasting shade. A single-piece, almost flat saddle follows the tank. The single-piece pillion grab rail adds a subtle finish to the back of the motorcycle. A chrome finish muffler further enhances the premium appeal of the SP 125. The bike rides on HET tubeless tyres that are wrapped in 5-spoke split alloy wheels and claim to deliver Low Rolling Resistance.

Mechanical specifications include a Bharat Stage VI compliant 125 cc single-cylinder, air-cooled, Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) HET (Honda Eco Technology) engine with Enhanced Smart Power (eSP). The eSP technology is claimed to optimise performance by reducing friction, enable silent start and provide a smooth eco-friendly ride. The first-in-segment ACG starter promises quiet start to the motorcycle. The system starts the motor jolt free through the same AC generator used to generate current and charge the battery. The system eliminates the need for a conventional starter motor.

The new motorcycle also uses PGM-FI tech that features eight onboard sensors to constantly inject optimum fuel and air mixture. The system aims to deliver consistent power output, high fuel efficiency and fewer emissions. Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India claim a 16% improvement in the fuel efficiency over its predecessor.
