Honda has also used the ‘125 Sports Edition’ badging on the front fairing whereas the ‘Grazia’ logo has been placed on the rear cowl. The Honda Grazia has been one of the most stylish automatic scooters in its segment.

Honda was one of the first two-wheeler manufacturers in India to start selling BS6-compliant products. However, not all Honda products made it to the new greener era. For example, the Honda CBR 250R, which was originally a BS3 model and was upgraded to BS4 in 2018, is no longer be a part of Honda’s line-up.

The Indian arm of the Japanese two-wheeler brand said in a statement that the suspected quality issue in the front brake master cylinder might cause difficulty in the rotation of the front wheel. With customer safety and comfort its utmost priority, Honda as a pre-cautionary measure, will voluntarily inspect these models manufactured between February 4 to July 3, 2019. Top 10 best-selling automatic scooter in India - June 2019 https://indianautosblog.com/top-10-automatic-scooter-in-india-june-2019-p318004 Tue, 30 Jul 2019 05:24:16 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=318004 Automatic scooters form a major chunk of two-wheeler sales in India. However, they have been affected due to the ongoing economic slump. Scooter had a market share of 32% in June 2018, and in June 2019, the market share was at 31%. That’s despite the fact that the Indian two-wheeler market has shrunk by nearly 12%. The Honda Activa continues to be a major crowd puller but its magic wand may have seemed to have lost a few stars. The Splendor has overtaken the Activa once again but the gap was just around 6,000 units in June 2019. TVS Jupiter also lost on volumes but continues to be in the second spot.

The shining light though is the Suzuki Access 125 which continues to be the largest selling 125 cc scooter. Besides that, Access 125 has also shrunk the gap from Jupiter to a little less than 8,000 units. Here is the list of the top 10 best-selling automatic scooters in India in June 2019:

Honda Activa: Powering the next two-wheeler revolution

Honda Activa 5G front at 2018 Auto Expo
Honda Activa 5G sales stood at 2,36,739 units sold in June 2019.

With 2,36,739 units sold in June 2019, things are in the red for the Honda Activa. In fact, a 26% drop in sales in the first quarter of FY 2019-20 may seem pretty grim. However, Honda can still pull off stellar sales in the upcoming festive season. In fact, June was the company's best-ever performance in this fiscal. Prices of the Honda Activa start at INR 54,911 (ex-showroom, Delhi). Honda even introduced a Limited Edition Activa recently to with some cosmetic changes to get the volumes up.

The Honda Activa is powered by a time tested 109.19 cc mill. Key features include a mix of digital and analogue instrumentation, LED headlamp and Eco Speed Indicator. Also available is a service due indicator and a 4-in-1 lock with seat opening switch.

TVS Jupiter: The one that got away

Tvs Jupiter Zx Disc Brake Variants Left Front Quar
The TVS Jupiter underwent a minor drop in sales and registered 56,254 units in June 2019.

While the TVS Jupiter did see a drop in sales, the numbers still hold strong. That’s really commendable during this slowdown. TVS even introduced the updated version of Jupiter ZX with an LED headlamp and a combo of digital and analogue instrumentation. That places the Jupiter fair and square against the Honda Activa 5G.

Prices for the TVS Jupiter begin at INR 52,945 (ex-showroom, Delhi) and you get to choose from a variety of colour options. Besides that, the features list includes an external fuel filler cap and a special easy use main stand. Volumes in June 2019 stood at 56,254 units in June 2019.

The rise of Suzuki Access 125 has been phenomenal. Volumes grew by 16% in the first quarter of FY 2019-20. In June 2019, volumes stood at 49,366 units which is a significant Y-o-Y growth from 38,338 units last year. Prices of the Suzuki Access 125 begin at INR 57,219 (ex-showroom, Delhi). The scooter boasts a large 21.5-litre under-seat storage, DC charging socket and a handy front pocket to store things.

Suzuki recently introduced a new colour option with a Limited Edition model of the Access 125. The Limited Edition variant is now offered in Metallic Matte Bordeaux, Metallic Sonic Silver, Metallic Matte Black and Pearl Mirage White.

Honda Dio: India’s most exported automatic scooter

2018 Honda Dio Deluxe press yellow
The Honda Dio continues to be India's most exported automatic scooter.

The guys at Honda 2Wheelers India managed to find 43,749 new buyers for Honda Dio in June 2019. The numbers have grown in the domestic market for the Dio but their trouble lies elsewhere. Dio continues to be largest exported automatic scooter from India but volumes dropped from more than 52,478 units in Q1 FY 2018-19 to just 29,756 units in FY 2019-20. Hopefully, things will be better in the next quarter for them.

The Honda Dio's prices begin at INR 53,218 (ex-showroom, Delhi). Some of its main features include LED headlamp, all-digital instrumentation and 4-in-1 lock with seat opening switch.

TVS NTorq: Smartness has a new name

TVS Ntorq 125 left side action first ride review
The sporty TVS NTorq is in the 5th spot in June 2019 with 21,738 new customers.

The TVS NTorq has climbed up to the 5th spot with 21,738 new customers in June 2019. The introduction of a drum brake variant has certainly helped in increasing the sales of the scooter. Features like connected instrumentation with navigation and call alerts are its USPs. Prices begin at INR 58,872 (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the entry-level drum brake variant.

At the heart of the TVS NTorq is a 124.79 cc engine producing 9.4 PS of power and 10.5 Nm of torque. TVS even introduced a new Matte Silver colour option in June 2019 which will hopefully help it further increase their sales. The TVS Ntorq competes with products like Honda Grazia, Aprilia SR125 and Hero Maestro Edge 125.

Yamaha took the market with a storm when it launched the Fascino. The automatic scooter was styled to have a modern-retro theme. Volumes may have dropped in the past few months, and in June 2019 the numbers stood at 15,519 units. Yamaha has not updated the Fascino for quite some time and if better pull off a fast one if if wants to grab the market share.

Nearly 32% of these are automatic scooters. That’s no mean feat for a market which had around 12% scooter sales in 2009. While most of the volumes in the market are centred around 110 cc scooters, the market has slowly begun to mature and the demand for premium scooters is rising.

The Honda Grazia has a fancy little tachometer in its instrumentation console.

Every year manufacturers have been adding more and more premium scooters to the market. Here’s a list of our favourite premium automatic scooters one can use as a daily ride:

Honda Grazia - The best-looking scooter by Honda 2Wheelers India yet

It is no doubt that Honda is the king of scooters in India. So, when they decided to venture in the premium scooter market, they decided to bring in several segment-first features. The Honda Grazia was the first scooter in India to feature an all-LED headlamp. The design was radically different from the lakhs of Activas they sell every month. The sharp cuts, pointed beaky headlamp and the split grab rails catch your attention from the word go.

Powering the Honda Grazia is the same 124.9 cc air-cooled mill which does duty in the Activa 125. This engine produces 8.63 PS of power and 10.54 Nm of torque. The Honda Grazia has a 190 mm disc up front and a 130 mm drum brake in the rear. It is suspended on a telescopic fork in the front.

Honda Grazia shares the same powerplant as the Honda Activa 125

The Honda Grazia’s features list is handsome enough to put a lot of premium scooters to shame. The instrumentation is all-digital and includes a unique 3-step Eco Speed Indicator. The premium scooter houses even a tachometer in its display. The rear suspension has 3 adjustable pre-sets. The front apron hides a small glovebox which can store your knick-knacks or your cell phone which can be charged by an optional charger. The premium scooter also gets a 4-in-1 lock with seat opening switch.

The Honda Grazia has been priced at INR 65,095 for the top end trim which gets you the disc brake. We wish it hadn’t shared the rearview mirror with the commuter motorcycle line-up.

TVS Ntorq – The most fun scooter in the market

Tvs Ntorq Matte Silver 2
The TVS Ntorq has gained a new Matte Silver colour option.

If the TVS Grazia is the sharpest looking premium scooter in the market, while the TVS Ntorq is the smartest and the most fun-to-ride scooter. The latter was the first Indian scooter to offer Bluetooth connectivity. The premium scooter has stealth aircraft-inspired looks, fancy looking LED taillamp, 12-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels and a sporty grab rail.

Powering the TVS Ntorq is a 124.79 cc air-cooled, 3-valve mill engine produces 9.4 PS of power and 10.5 Nm of torque. Braking duties are dispensed by a 220 mm petal disc in the front and a 130 mm drum in the rear. It tips the scales at 116.1 kg and has a large 22-litre under-seat storage space. The instrumentation is all-digital and offers turn-by-turn navigation and Caller ID function.

The fancy little LCD unit also has a built-in lap timer, 0-60 km/h time recorder, 3 trip meters, lap time recorder, engine temperature indicator and a personalised welcome message. Heck, you can even set an auto-reply SMS for the phone calls you get while riding! And boy, you even get an engine kill switch.

Our only gripe with the scooter, though, is that it does not feature an LED headlamp. The TVS Ntorq has a price tag of INR 59,995 (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the disc brake variant, making it a tremendous value for money premium scooter.

Suzuki Burgman Street – India’s very own maxi-scooter

Suzuki Burgman Street spied at showroom grey front right quarter
The Suzuki Burgman Street shares the powerplant with the Suzuki Access 125.

Suzuki entered the premium scooter market with India’s only maxi-scooter on sale right now, the Suzuki Burgman Street. Why not first? Well, that’s a title for the Kinetic Blaze. The Japanese manufacturer has been using the Burgman moniker and design philosophy for many years now in the European and ASEAN markets. And the moment you set your eyes on the scooter, only one thing comes to mind! This premium scooter is huge in size. And in a good way too.

Powering the Suzuki Burgman Street is the 124 cc air-cooled, SOHC engine which also does duty in the Suzuki Access. The latter is coincidentally the largest selling 125 cc scooter in the market. The engine can produce 8.7 PS of power and 10.2 Nm of torque. Despite the bulky body, the premium scooter from the house of Suzuki tips the scales at just 108 kg.

The features list includes an LED headlamp, aluminium footrest, 21.5-litre under seat storage and a 2-litre glove box near the key slot. A second storage compartment is also present which houses a USB charger. The all-digital instrumentation is reminiscent of the Gixxer and has large readouts.

The Suzuki Burgman Street has been priced at INR 69,208 (ex-showroom, Delhi). Issues with the scooter? Well, I am really nitpicking here. I wish Suzuki had given a rear brake lock.

Vespa SXL 150 – Retro love

The Vespa SXL 150 has a monocoque body.

The Vespa SXL 150 is the perfect premium scooter you want for your ride to be reminiscent of the 60s. The Piaggio-owned Vespa brand has given the SXL 150 a distinctive rectangular headlamp. The mono-coloured body can be bought in 6 eye-catching candy-inspired colours. The sturdy scooter is built on a monocoque steel body.

Powering the Vespa SXL 150 is, as the name suggests, a 150 cc 3-valve, single cylinder engine with an aluminium cylinder head. A variable spark time management system helps in giving an ideal amount of power output depending on the need. The engine can produce 10.06 PS of power and 10.9 Nm of torque. Vespa’s premium scooter is suspended on a unique single-sided arm in the front with anti-dive. The rear gets a dual effect hydraulic suspension.

The Vespa SXL 150 can be connected to your smartphone which can be used to book a service, panic alert and contact the customer care. That’s not all, the premium scooter also gets the safety net of ABS. The Vespa SXL 150 has been priced at INR 1,04,763 (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Brakes include a 220 mm disc in the front and the 120 specification tyres seem a boon. It also gets a large 6.5-litre fuel tank and ABS. That’s not all, you also get the same smartphone connectivity as seen in the Vespa SXL 150.

The Aprilia SR 150 Race is priced at INR 92,984 (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Apart from the visual upgrade, the Honda Grazia features the same mechanical specifications and components. Propelling tasks are performed by 124.9 cc, single-cylinder, fan-cooled, carburetted engine that delivers 8.52 bhp at 6,500 rpm and 10.54 Nm at 5,000 rpm.

Every second scooter buyer in Central India opting for a Honda https://indianautosblog.com/honda-2wheeler-india-scooter-sales-milestone-p316436 Thu, 14 Feb 2019 13:30:55 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=316436 Here’s an interesting fact. Every second scooter buyer in Central India is opting for a Honda 2Wheelers India product. In fact, the company has crossed the 60 lakh cumulative customers mark in Central India in its 18th year of operations. The sales are led by the growing demand in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

Honda 2Whelers India has crossed 60 lakh unit sales milestone in Central India. The growth is led by the automatic scooter portfolio of the company.

The growth witnessed a several-fold increase in the last six and a half years. The first 10 lakh customer mark took over 11 years (2001 to 2012), and then, in just six and a half years, the cumulative sales grew exponentially by 50 lakh units. In fact, the latest 10 lakh unit sales were clocked in just 1.4 years.

Honda 2Wheeler India’s scooter portfolio, which comprises seven products – Activa 5G, CLIQ, Dio, Aviator, Activa-i, Activa 125 and the GRAZIA – led the growth. In the last 10 years, the contribution of the automatic scooters to overall two-wheelers has nearly doubled from 10% to 19%.

Speaking about achieving the milestone, Yadvinder Singh Guleria, Senior Vice President - Sales and Marketing, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India said:

We are delighted to win the trust of over 60 lakh Customers in the heart of India. Backing our increasing Customer base, we have been aggressively expanding our network. Today we are servicing our Customers through over 1250 touchpoints in central region.

However, not all scooters have seen a positive response in the Indian market. Thus, the company would axe some of the products from its portfolio. Minoru Kato, President and Chief Executive, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India has confirmed that not all models would be continued post the BS-VI upgrade. At least one model from the company’s current product portfolio will be chopped off during the BS-VI upgrade.

The BS-VI compliant products are expected to arrive in early 2020. Apart from complying with the emission norms, fuel injection technology would result in a better economy. However, the cost to comply with the new emission norms is going to be higher and the result would be a substantial increase in the final prices. Honda could use Auto Expo 2020 as an opportunity to showcase and launch its updated portfolio.
